Re: Asymmetrical Labium- Effects?

Post by rhulsey »

I don't want to beat the dead horse, and am too old to get in any rasslin' match, but I would like to weigh in here briefly.

I've been an organbuilder and voicer for over 30 years now, and know very well the importance of alignment when it comes to all the pieces/parts of a pipe or whistle. That said, the final outcome - the sound - is what matters. It would be nice if everything looked as though it were spoken into being, and sometimes that is the case, but again, it is a matter of sound. Voicing involves not only knowing what to do, but also knowing when to stop.

I have a large collection of Pat O'Riordan whistles, and have owned about every kind available out there at one time or another. I constantly marvel at the variety of construction methods of these magical instruments and the sounds they produce. However, a REALLY close-up look reveals not the precision one might expect, especially on a largely hand-crafted instrument. In fact, I've also thought on more than one occasion, in looking closely, 'how'd he get this thing to sound so good when it looks like that'?!

Paul, I think your work looks wonderful.

We're off to Mexico next month, so I'll have to look for a Mexican wrestling mask. If I find a good one, it's ON, baby! :D

Paul, I've got a Nacho Libre luchador mask here if you'd like to borrow it. You'll have to find your own stretchy pants though.

Enjoy your whistle. I'm a scientist too, but sometimes you just gotta put the microscope down.

Indeed. I'm calling mea culpa on this one, because for the record I really like the whistle. It's an excellent instrument and Paul has been nothing less than cordial throughout our interactions.

But we're still gonna wrestle, right?

Best wishes,

I believe the challenge was between two whistle makers. I don't see what I have to gain by wrestling with a customer.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Blackwood and stainless steel. I'll post a video if I can find some time- finals are ridiculous this term.

I did end up borrowing a thumb rest from the Eb Susato to use on the Busman (after carefully sanding the rest so it didn't scratch or stress the wood). My little finger is far too short to effectively balance the whistle.

Ain't it funny how things turn out. At least we've uncovered whistle makers' secret desire to wear lycra. :-)

We've uncovered nothing of the kind. What we've uncovered is the C&F members' collective secret desire to SEE whistle makers wearing Lycra.

Best wishes,
Jerry
