Blimey, he cleared the coffee table! I haven't seen the whole top of it for, oh, what, 20 years? :boggle:

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Nah. It's only full of stuff when you're here Jem. The rest of the time the whole house is spotless.

So I'm guessing that chess is not a big draw in the Hall household ...

My Lewis set would look nice on that table. For me, chess is all about appearances because my actual chess playing stinks.

Not necessarily. My chess playing is rusty. But I used to be pretty good at one time. I think I could dust it off OK. I've got a glass set that goes quite nicely on that table.

I'm not sure I could tell apart the white from the black squares on that table!
Psychodelic, man! I played chess yesterday on a non-traditional artistic sort of
set, and kept losing pieces cause I'd mistake bishops for pawns. Fortunately
my opponent did too. We finally agreed to call it a draw.

The white and black squares kind of jump out at you after a while. Basically, the 'black' squares are black, white and grey marble and the 'white' squares are green and brown marble.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Marbles. That's more my kind of game.

In our post student days when we lived near each other in Cardiff we (Ben & I) used to spend evenings playing games - crib, backgammon, sometimes chess... I stood a chance in the games with an element of chance. I know the rules of chess, but can't play meaningfully.

Oh. Nice box, BTW. Bit ostentatious, like.... :poke:

Indeed. But not entirely. Glad you noticed the set-up. Thought someone would.

Thanks for the link, I might try my hand at making a fancy box like this...

Now I've seen Ben's new box for real, I have to say it is truly gorgeous. Utterly impractical for a working case, mind - it'll need multiple outer cases to protect it if taken out of the house and it's already quite bulky! But lovely.
