Darn nice flute. Can't tell where the restorations were, but guess in the head/barrel.

Appears to include the case.

Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

Yup real sweet picture. Wish there was one of the Potter flute also offered in this auction.

Always amazes me that even a premium antique flute, like the R&R noted, is estimated at only a fraction of the cost of a violin bow :o

So I guess we should be thankful, right?

The description lists eight padded keys. The picture shows pewter plugs on the articulated foot keys. Oversight?

Tell us something.: in two words, Rudall & Rose. but since a minimum of 100 characters is required, I should list a number of makers I found extremely interesting… I don't even know how much are 100 characters...

descriptions are usually poor...
starting price could be much higer than the estimated one, and sometimes much lower too (don't know why)!

nice nice, nice flute, again, wish to have more money.

I seem to like the ones made around that time 30's early 40's.

Not sure why. David anything important about the flutes made then?

off-hand, probably because there seem to be more of the medium holes than larger ones, but that's just going on memory of the serial number.

tuning's not that bad, either.

There are pockets of serial numbers with very nice tuning, indeed.
And I'm not at all clear yet why that is since it's not following any logical pattern. I'm sure McGee has an opinion on the matter since he's tracked the measurement issue more than most.

anyways.....i dont' doubt this is a nice rudall. I'm not buying....for reasons i will explain at a later moment.

Is Sotheby's the same auction house as Bonham's?

From an auction house? Not a chance!

Ah, well this one's at Bonham's then.

Besides the repaired cracks in the head and barrel, the foot joint blocks look funny, like they've been re-worked, too. Also, the wood looks kind of cruddy around both sides of the Eb block.

Note that the low C & C# keys are stuck in the closed position, when they should be open.
