Sam Murray - New Website/E-mail?

Post by MJ1619 »

Hey Everybody,

I noticed while searching the web over the past few days that Sam Murray has apparently created a website and now has an e-mail. I was wondering if anyone has tried and succeeded in using the e-mail listed to contact him?

Thanks and all the best,

Michael

Tell us something.: Love playing trumpet and modern flute at church as well as Irish trad flute in a band. Been playing Irish trad and 18th century period music for about 15 years.

Yes, I've recently e-mailed Sam and received a reply a couple of days later. Sam is busy so he may not reply immediately.

As i have just received a flute from him, i have had some e-mail conversation as well, and it has been working satisfactory i'd say.
Bearing in mind that he probably has more important things to do than to sit and watch the inbox, i'd say that i didn't have anything to complain about.

out of curiosity, which flute did you buy?

His website is interesting. I notice Sam has started to archive new photos/cross sections of all of his new flutes.

His waiting times look great too.

"We later received an instrument for restoration by Henry Wylde from Ruddal Rose with what appeared to be gold key work. I passed this over to a jeweller friend of mine, who tested the keys and discovered that they were not gold but in fact bronze.
We are now introducing bronze rings and keys as an option, they go particularly well with blackwood having the appearance of pale gold."

Interesting.

It is, very! Although i once had a "Viking" necklace, a replica of a piece of jewelry found in Denmark. Thing is it reacted quite badly with my skin, and i was constantly green around my neck :( Hopefully Sam is using a different alloy or whatever as i wouldn't fancy a flute with green rings and keys..

Wouldn't the green bling give the instrument all sorts of "Celtic cred"?

Best wishes.

Cool! :D

Can you twist his arm and get him to play a slow air on it? I'd love to hear the slower tones come out of it.

I'm wondering why the embouchure is an issue on this flute. Does it just have a very tight sweetspot and need more experience to milk it?

You just have to get used to it, but than it is able of an amazing tone. No issues at all with Sam's embouchure holes.

To clarify - the issue is *my* embouchure. The flute is stellar. Markus got (IMO) stronger sound out of it than his own Grinter. :)
When i do get it right at random intervals, the flute vibrates between my fingers and has a really "fat" earthy sound, so again, the flute is a gem, i'm not ;)
