Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I don't know. It's true that I love it with sharp Cs. At least one time through, I like to play an open D drone loudly while playing those C#s. Great. :D

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I don't think that was it. But whatever it was, it was mystifying, and a bewitchery. Tom? Would you be so good as to offer us some ABCs or dots?

Here's a quick-and-dirty-pre-coffee-6:00am-one-off of this tune.

Your link takes us to the log-in page, Mister Kleen. (I've always wanted to write that!)

I think it might need to be set to public?

Tommy, you need to get a public url for your file. Click the "Share" link besides your file, then copy the link provided.

Aha, yes, exactly what I was imagining. My ABC is a variant setting of yours. Minus the lovely morning pipering, of course.

It's fun to rework tunes into different tune types. The process of working out what is essential to the identity of a tune when it's rhythmically transformed can be very instructive..

Thanks, Mr. Kleen!

Mr.Gumby wrote:Séamus Ennis (in his notes for one of the Clancy recordings) suggested it switches from 6/8 , 9/8 and 3/8
To me the practice of moving the bar lines around to match someone's perception of where the accent falls is a needless complication.

Staying in 6/8; alternating between 6/8 and 9/8 and 3/8; or writing the whole thing in 12/8... these are rather artificial distinctions which only change how the tune looks on paper, not how it sounds.

Now, on an early flute recording from the teens or 20s, there's an extremely interesting rythm going on with a slip jig, one part being the normal Irish

9/8 = 3+3+3

But the other part sounding like the Bulgarian

9/8 = 2+2+2+3

Were I to transcribe it, I would stay in 9/8 but I would group the notes differently to reflect the rythm of the tune.

This same rythmic shift can be heard in one of the Northumbrian Smallpipe 9/8 jigs.
