One word: Photoshop.

Besides, that's not a panda. That's a parrot. A Norwegian Blue. Pining for the fjords.

I have never seen or heard the term t'ai-p'ing hsiao in all my travels in China over 20 years: from the spelling, it may be a Taiwan term (on the mainland it would be spelled taiping xiao).

I have only ever heard this called the mu di (i.e. 'shepherd's/cowherd's flute'). Otherwise, you're absolutley right.

Please see usage here also

which is consistent with MT Guru's usage.

The difference in spelling in terms of Roman graphemes is really neither here nor there because the thing will be written in chinese ideograms on both mainland China and Taiwan.

The fact that you may have never come across the usage of the term in your limited 20 years on mainland China may be due to the fact that Taiwan, as it preserves soemwhat the pre communist, old world culture of China, may be more inclined to old, classical nomenclature.

Erm...yes. I think it's safe to assume that Brian of all people would already be quite well aware of all that. After all, even I know it, and I don't even speak any kind of Chinese beyond "ni hao" and "xie xie". For a person in his field, that would be just basic history from which anyone should be able to put two and two together. And it's not an esoteric history scarcely available for the rest of us; the subject, being world-scale history from the start, still comes up periodically in the news if that's as far as we get.

But I suppose that we can all stand a reminder, and if we remember your post as that, it won't seem quite so like a retort.

well if he is aware of this as you say why does he appear to correct MT Guru about something that doesn't really need correction? And please don't tell me that he doesn't seem to be correcting becuase after he did it he said, "Otherwise you're absolutely right" which means other than the part he commented on MT Guru is right.

If you wish view my post as a retort I would would respectfully ask you to consider it as a retort to the BH retort to MT Guru's friendly, on topic and informative post.

The answer is that he doesn't. You saw it that way. Since he didn't specifically express a doubt for the record, saying he never heard it called something on the mainland I see as no kind of correction, just an observation (based on personal experience) on how things must surely change over time, and/or on how regionality is in play. That's all. But since you started this pot to brewing, let's let Brian tell us what he meant by "Otherwise, you're absolutely right" before we all jump to our various conclusions, shall we?

I'm sure he'll be surprised to find that he even needed to.
