Post by patsky »

Hello all,
Before there were recordings there was player pianos and large music boxes. I stumbled across this one. I thought you'all might be interested.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I just saw an episode of "Hows That Made" on the company that still makes the same style music box.
The discs are still punched manually from a master template.
The punch leaves a curl of metal on the underside of the disc, this plucks the forks as it goes round.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Amazing, pretty, and yet, if forced to listed to it over and over, I would surely want to put my head under a bus. Just can handle all that plink-n-ring. Hammered dulcimers and wire harps can have a similar effect on me. Maybe it's a neurological thing. :-?
