You think whistling looks odd?

Some folks believe they don’t look very ‘cool’ playing the whistle. Try looking cool playing a Sheng: :astonished:

I don’t have any photos and I’m certainly not having one taken of me in the act but I reckon the most uncool looking thing would be someone playing a melodica not through the usual mouthpiece but through the hose they also supply. When I play melodica that’s what I use because it enbles me to lay the keyboard down flat and to play like a standard keyboard instrument. I bet it looks incredibly daggy.

He looks dorky, but she looks cool!

There’s a guy, I think from Cork, who plays one of these yokes. He is absolutely brilliant playing Irish music on it, he is usually up for the Willie Clancy Week and every year I am mesmerised by him playing it, unbelievable stuff full of octave playing and little harmonies. I have some interesting photos of him playing in the street whith whistlers, fluteplayers and a fiddler.

This is the Japanese version of the same instrument. The Sho is played in the ancient gagaku court music.

It creates a beautiful wall of sound, much like drones on the pipes.

I got married in a Japanese-style ceremony at this shrine two years ago.

The ceremony was accompanied by live Gagaku music.
It has a very unusual sound, but it grows on you.

Mukade

Nuts. I couldn’t hear the sound sample. But I did hear the full performance from the video I snatched the still from.

“Before the instrument is played, it is heated over a charcoal fire. This eliminates any moisture that may have accumulated inside the instrument and prevents the pitches of the pipes from being altered or the reeds not sounding.”

Exactly what I do with my whistles and flutes! I must try this with my old Lachenal EC tonight!

Gosh, bongs have evolved since the last time I saw one!
