WTT: Bryan Byrne Flute

Here’s the scoop: I’ve always wanted to try one of Bryan’s flutes and I finally found one used so I purchased it, knowing full well I’d have pass it on due to my blackwood allergies. Sucks, or perhaps blows is what I should say, but that’s the way it is. I’m not necessarily in a rush to part with the flute, so I thought I look for the right trade before offering the flute for sale. I’ll list the things I’m looking for and if you have something on the list we can talk. Could be a straight trade or additional cash could go in either direction depending on the value of what you have.

First, a bit about the flute:
Bryan Byrne African Blackwood (grenadilla) D Flute with silver rings. The head joint is fully lined with brass and the slide is silver over brass. Bryan and I have spoken about the flute and he says it was made between 2002 and 2004. This is what he calls his “medium hole” Rudall style flute. This flute is capable of a really wonderful tone that I would describe as complex and dark. My sense is that this flute projects well. Plenty of reediness there if you want it and you have the lip for that sound. This flute really does best with a fairly focused embouchure, so maybe not the best flute for someone just getting started. The flute is not fancy in any way, however the craftsmanship is exceptional, right up there with the top 2 or 3 makers out there. Really, I’d keep this flute if I weren’t allergic to it. 'Nuff said.

I’m looking for any of the following:
Bryan Byrne flute in Delrin. Bryan says he’s made exactly one of these. If you have it and would be interested in trading (or even flat out selling) please contact me.

Keyless or Keyed flutes in D, Eb, C, or Bb in Delrin, Boxwood, Red Lancewood by Wilkes, Olwell, Grinter. Will also consider Gallagher Bb flutes in the above mentioned materials as well as dogwood.

Bodies to fit some flutes I already have: I could use Eb bodies for an Olwell and a Grinter.

Hmm, that’s I can think of at the moment. Probably better to contact me via email rather than PM.

Thanks,

Loren

Still open to trades for the Byrne, check the list above to see what I’m looking for.

Quick note to add that, while I haven’t played some of the best maker’s flutes, I’ve played a good number, and I consider the Byrne the most alive and beautiful flute I’ve ever played. Also it’s quite comfortable in the hands. It is, as Loren notes, demanding.
