Unusual Whistle

I have an interesting whistle that I would like some feedback and identification on it as I have never seen one before. Unfortunately, I can seem to drag the picture into into this message. Can you help?

Can you see the link below?

Hi, welcome. Upload your whistle picture to a photo sharing site (Flikr, tinypic.com, etc.) and post the link here. We don’t host photos on this board.

No, your computer’s desktop is not a photo sharing site (or internet server). See previous post …

At least you hope it isn’t…

Please try the link below to see the whistle that I need to be identified.

Many thanks for all your interesting replies. The knob below the fipple window has a small hole in it which suggests the needle music stand suggested in one of the replies below.

Yes, it is unusual. What is that knob below the fipple window?

For the bubble blower ? Aren’t these what they used on the Lawrence Welk St. Patrick’s Day show ?

Best wishes.

Steve

The carburetor.

Oh right. I forgot about the need for a constant supply of whistle fuel. And manual carburetion is so inconvenient.

You can also connect a vacuum pump for autowhistling, when you’re just too pooped to puff.

Or maybe it’s the tuning knob.

Looks like some kind of membrane resonator (ala kazoo) to me.

Always entertaining here I must say…

Just guessing, what do I know… perhaps the contraption attaches to some kind of stand so it can be played without holding it (just fingered) ?

You know, multi-instrumentalist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G879VvAmyHU

Foky-Gruber or Hopf Foky-Gruber ‘Silberton’ recorder. But that knob/carb thing’s not normal and appears to be a user modification.

Good catch, Peter. My browser truncates the right side of the photo by default, and I missed the double holes entirely.

The ligature holding the fipple block is unusual, too.

In order to play the Volk Musik on the Foky Gruber, one must read the Volk Musik
and in order to read the Volk Musik, one must hold the Volk Musik
and in order to hold the Volk Musik, one must use one of these::

We like order.

I don’t believe you. You are a music liar! :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh dear…more punishment…

They were off the side of mine till I scrolled, but I recognised the mouthpiece and thumb rest!

That’s so you can adjust the voicing. (I’ve never really bothered with mine, but the OP’s looks like it’s been set to increase the window length.)

I’ve still got my metal-head/wood-body alto, but regret selling my metal soprano many years ago. And don’t think I’ve seen that all-metal alto before.

What an interesting design, with the double holes and adjustable voicing.

How does it sound, Peter?

I’ve often thought that it would be very handy if a whistle maker were to come out with a whistle with a low C foot and double holes. I’m surprised Susato hasn’t done. They would be the ones, I would think! (Thick walls for effective double holes.)

Dat’s my spiel and I’m stickin to it!

Could be the new Colorado version. That’s one “smoking” whistle.
