The initial bid is $6,500 and the buy-it-now price is $21,000. For that price, you’d expect better photos. It’s not even clear if it’s one chanter or two.

wow, scammOrama.. I’d bet

or suspect, at the least

eeesh

“could date back to at least the 14th century (or before)”

Right. :boggle:

Coulda been Minnesota Vikings who took a wrong turn in Nebraska.

rgouette, I never ascribe to malice what can be explained by cluelessness …

Does this look familiar?

Or how about this?

Those are weaving bobbins, not bagpipe parts. Second from the right in my second link has “finger”-holes in it, too. I’ve seen a few weaving bobbins in my day, but I don’t recall that feature, nor do I know what purpose those holes serve. Unless it’s for playing chunes while you’re waiting for the spinner to get his or her ass in gear. But, I’m thinking smart money sez not.

There is no way on Earth - none at all - that those are worth 6 grand, much less 21 grand. I’ve seen 'em in antique shops for, what? 18 bucks, maybe? I’d look into the seller. If he or she is clueless (I doubt that), at the very least an education is in order. 14th Century, indeed… :really:

If someone buys them thinking they’re chanters, that person will be royally screwed, and how. Especially at those prices.

Bobbins!! Excellent.

I just hope the seller didn’t pay $6000 for them.

Well, whatever the case, let’s hope no one else falls prey for false “chanter”, nor money.

i think Keenan’s old trailer’s a better deal.
also agree w/rgouette. (“There’s one born every minute…” eh?)

Yeah…probably so. Probably so.

Perhaps the seller reads this forum.

The listing has changed dramatically!

Too bad someone (like me, maybe) didn’t do a cut-and-paste of the earlier description so future readers could compare then and now. But, here’s the “now” so far, anyway:

Hello,

Looks like this could be a antique chanter / gralla / shawm / oboe / weapon / flashlight / candlestick / toilet paper holder / bobbin / telescope / rocket / early cell phone / camera / alien injectors! I dont have enough info so good luck! These are very very old antique so bid high!

Item sold as 2 antique wooden things that are unknown! have fun!

NO RETURNS SOLD AS IS

Yeah, he has to read this forum, or someone watches it for him. Why else would “bobbin” be listed now, and in such short order? And no sh*t, it’s changed. Now he wants 400K for the piece of crap. But hey, you can’t win if you don’t play.

It’s been finally educational, though. I had to look up “gralla”.

Best do your shopping elsewhere, folks.

Wow this is quite the bargain! AND it comes with FREE shipping!

I’m currently playing a chanter reed made from two splinters of the original cross of Jesus. It plays well all year long but gets a little depressed around the Spring of the year and I simply rest it till after Easter and it seems fine after that. Small quirk I’d say for a reed that’s two-thousand years old. I would have though I’d have to pay more for it but I picked it up for a couple hundred dollars from an Ethiopian gentleman who had recently been deposed from high office in that country and needed to transfer some cash and a rew valuable relics out of the country. I’m in the process of typing in my bank routing numbers so he can transfer the funds temporarily to my account and I stand to gain several thousand dollars in handling fees for my assistance.

Yeah, how big is the ball hitch?

Y’know, when I first saw it yesterday I thought “WTF, that’s a spool!?!” but then the fingerholes threw me. Then I wondered if it was someone’s idea of crafty recycling; they make walking-stick flutes, after all, so who knows? But I quit thinking about it after that, so glad to see someone in the know have an answer!

I’ve got a few spools & bobbins that look much like that; I’d guess they’re from around 1800 and I think I paid $5 for the lot … guess if they’d had holes I’d be sitting on a real motherlode.

NOTE: My post above did NOT say “Oh my goodness, what in the world?” until I hit the “Submit” button. How hilarious! Lichened again!

Rather distressing to have a perfectly good Dubya-Tee-Eff bowdlerised so that you come off sounding like Mister freakin’ Rogers, isn’t it. If there is any justice, C&F Admin will certainly have a special place set aside for them in Hades. Said the Mod.

What, you don’t think you could drill those holes yourself? Come ON. You play the pipes. Fiddling around with stuff is what you do. Black & Decker, sister, and then hellooooo eBay. Cha-CHING.
