Tweaked Shaws

Last week I received a tweaked Shaw sop D from Jerry Freeman. I just want to wholeheartedly recommend this whistle. (Or as Azalin would say: this whistle rocks!) Last night I played in a very crowded bar that was very loud. I couldn’t hear my Sindt at all, but I could hear myself playing the Shaw. It’s pretty much in tune and lightning fast. I’ve told Jerry that he needs to charge more for the tweaking than he does. I’ve never played an un-tweaked Shaw, but from what I’ve heard on the board the tweaked version is quite different. The air requirement on the tweaked version is about the same as my Sindt, it has a lot of chiff (which to me is overtones - not pure), very easy along two octaves, and quite loud. Susatos, while being loud, tend to have a recorderish sound. This thing is pure tinwhistle. These are delicate and you do have to be careful. (similiar in construction to a Clark original) I’m used to the heavy gauge brass of the Sindt. Last night I got carried away and started to use it for a drumstick. It now has a few dents, but still plays great.

Thanks and keep up the good work Jerry.

Jerry rocks.

I have one of Jerry’s tweaked Shaws. This is what “trad sound” means to me: like an original Clarke, but much better.
It’s the only “tin” whistle I keep playing, when I want a change from the very pure tone wooden ones.

I agree with the comment on its speed.
Also that it’s fragile. This metal is so soft, you can “untweak” the blade in no time. Now I protect it in a semi-hard case (cigar, double-corona size…)

Now I know it can be done, I’m on the hunt for Shaws in other tones.

Can you direct me to a place on-line where I can read about and order Jerry’s tweaked Shaws? Thanks!

He’s on the member list. You can send him a private message. I’ve got him tweaking my Shaw A.
