Tony Dixon w/ Brass Tuning Slide: Any reviews yet?

Come on, you folks with the new Dixons - what’s the word?

Come on, guys! I need to know if I should order one at the Whistle Shop!

Fess up,. who’s got one?

Beth,
It’s time you take the bull by the horns. Become a leader not a follower… Order one, then get the credit for doing the review.

I can’t, I need to know it’s good before I buy! I’ve already splurged on my in-progress Rose. grin

A student budget is not well matched with WhOA…

Edit…Darn you Tony…you’ve put the idea in my head now…hehe

Well, you see, I did actually do the digital photos at the weekend, and of the Susato VSB to compare bore with the Kildare, and of the Clare 2-piece to add to the Doolin vs Clare thread; but not being familiar with the technology, I found myself unable to download the pics to the PC. I know this should be as easy as falling off a log, but I think the software was made by Microsoft, so it was made really complex, beyond my feeble brainpower and patience. When I clicked on “Download”, to which I would expect a box with the desired desination to appear, I just got a box telling me I couldn’t as the file was locked. What file? I hadn’t chosen on yet.

So the pics exist, but I can’t show them to you! Still, I think they came out really well, which I’m sure is a great relief to know. Ahem. My 75 year old father may yet get on top of the problem, so maybe soon the pics will appear.

I was also planning to do a soundclip, but I don’t have the software for that, so what I’ll do, Beth, is I’ll play a bit on the minidisc I’m making for you, and you can listen to that. Even with me playing, hopefully it’ll give you an idea what it sounds like.

I would recommend you go ahead and order one, it’s a smart looking whistle, though if you have a Rose on the way, that may well replace it as your #1 when it arrives. Of course for me it’s definitely my #1, and as a result I’m scared to take it out of the house (sometimes even out of the case) and I play my Generation instead, as it’s replaceable.

Thanks Martin. Do you have an all-PVC Dixon D? I’d really like to know how they compare, as I quite like the dixon I have. I have found that I really like the sound of brass, too (based on Laughing and two piece Doolin) and am wondering how the tone changes, if at all.

If you email me (at yahoo with this username) I can try to troubleshoot your pics and sound issues.

I’ve had my soprano D Tony Dixon with brass tuning slide a few days now, and though I’m not in the slightest bit qualified to do a review, these are my first impressions.
Taking the whistle out of its carry case, it feels ‘quality’ if you know what I mean. It sort of whispers up at you: “Play me, you know you want to.” I haven’t managed to get it to squeak yet, which is quite an achievement, and the tuning slide has just the right amount of stiffness. I like it a lot.

Is Cnat played OXXOOO?

Yes

I just received mine last week. So far so good. I have an old style tuneable sop D from Tony. The new model I have is quieter and seems slightly more prone to clog, but takes less air and is purer. I do like it quite a bit. (even better than the original) Its pretty much my favorite right now, and I have a few of the expensive models. Definitely get one especially if you don’t have any other Dixons.

Don

All this talk of Rose’s…Mine is due this month…can’t wait.

Mine too, Gypsy!

You guys are an awful influence on WhOA. I just placed my order with Thom for TWO whistles: the new Dixon and a Clare two piece for rough pocket treatment.

I played Don’s tonight… It’s a sharp whistle… I have a regular tuneable soprano D and… well… it didn’t inspire me to get one… What would it take? Well, if Tony would work out the intonation problems with the soprano D then it might be one of my favorites… By the way… what’s the deal Tony? Every Soprano D that I’ve played of Mr. Dixon’s is out of tune with itself (an it’s not the player). Don’t get me wrong I love my Dixon but I can’t play it with other whistles without it being horribly out of tune…

For what its worth…

Is anyone else out there experiencing a similar problem with their Soprano D?
(I don’t have a Dixon soprano D but would like to learn more on this matter.)If a problem exists, is it confined only to Dixon’s Soprano D whistle?

I had a problem with my tunable PVC Dixon D at first. I got it from The Whistle Shop and the second octave D seemed out of tune. I contacted Thom, and he told me to send it back to him and also to contact Tony Dixon. I did so and within two weeks I had a replacement straight from Mr. Dixon himself. He included a nontunable D (in addition to the replacement tunable D) as a gift from him.

Moral of the story? Dixons have excellent customer service. You can’t go wrong.

I recieved my Dixon brass tunable D today from Shana Quay, along with a two piece doolin (which was free with the purchase of a tunebook). The dixon is very nice, I don’t own the regular dixon D to compare it to, although I do have an A and a low D. The brass D is very sweet and pure sounding, and it looks great too,a very nice whistle for the price. By the way I like the Doolin 2 piece better than my Clare 2 piece, nicer sound and no icky green mouthpiece! Steve’s service was great too, the order arrived a few days earlier than the 2 weeks anticipatecd.

I have a non-tunable soprano D. It’s almost right on in the 1st octave but about 1/4 sharp in the 2nd octave. I didn’t send it back, though, because I had had it about 6 months before I put it on a tuner.

I’ll let you know about the tuning on my Dixon non-tunable low D when it arrives.

OK, just got my Brass slide D.

Appearance: VERY purrrdy. Classy and professional looking.

Playing: has a solid feel, possibly due to the weight of the brass slide. Feels good under your fingers.

Octaves are pretty balanced in terms of air pressure (caveat: the 3rd octave D, see below). You don’t feel like you have to blow softly on the lower notes to avoid it jumping to the next octave.

Tone: very clear and pure, sweet. When I first tried it last nite, I thought it sounded a lot like my normal tunable D. But today, when compared side by side, it’s obviously less chiffy and breathy than the standard tunable. Maybe I was too excited last nite with the new acquisition to really listen to it.

Tuning - mine’s fine according to my ear, except for the 3rd octave D which is very slightly flat unless you blow hard, which of course means that D is REALLY LOUD. Ouch. DON’T PLAY THAT D IN A CONFINED PLACE WITH GOOD ACOUSTICS.

It’s in tune with the slide pulled out about 0.7 cm.

Air requirements: low

Volume: I don’t find it softer unlike some other reviewers. Maybe just slightly, but because the tone is so pure and without breathiness, it cuts through nevertheless.

Conclusion: Very nice D whistle. I think there’ll be things for which I’ll still use my standard tunable and Clarke original. But if you want a very professional-looking, pure & sweet sounding whistle at a reasonable price, the brass slide model is a winner.

I’ve got a Dixon D, C, and Bb. I checked with my electronic tuner and the D and Bb are right on, and the C is very close. It’s certainly never been off far enough that I’ve noticed it while playing.
