There seems to be plenty of piping clubs over in America and a few in Canada and of course quite a number in Europe. Has anyone ever tried to get one going in or around Sydney/Canberra/Newcastle or even informal regular meetings as a group?
I realise that there are very few pipers around here compared to overseas but it seems (and from experience on GHB pipes) that the best way for a piper to improve is to talk to and meet with other pipers.
The National Folk Festival is held every year in Canberra, which attracts a few pipers (especially if there is a uilleann pipes workshop). This is about the closest thing to a group in Canberra. As far as I know, there are three pipers, including myself, still living in Canberra, and one in Sydney. The status of a Canberra group is currently me and Jimbo having hooked up once with the intention of hooking up from time to time in the future.
I agree that talking with pipers is a good way to learn about piping, which is why the C&F forum is so good to have access to.
I saw a tape of the piping concert at this years festival ( or rather the 1st 40 minutes of it ). With 5 pipers playing ( 2 uilleann ) it seemed like a popular event.I hope the interest grows.
