susato site down?

Anyone know whats up with their web site(susato.com)? I’ve been trying since yesterday afternoon(m.t.).

Just tried the site and found this:

“This domain has been parked. This site is currently under construction and we will have more for you soon.”

I just tried the site and the penny whistle section is back up. Some of the other sections are still down. It appears that the prices have gone up!

This is off topic, but it would be rude of me not to say …

wd40, meet Gears. Gears, this is wd40.

I’m sure you two have lots to talk about.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Hello Jerry Freeman,

Still off topic.

It took me awhile to get your pun. I need some lubrication to the brain. I think my autotransmixer is out.

Another
Jerry.

Hi, Jerry.

I saw that and just couldn’t resist. There are people who have to live with my sense of humor every day. Saints, they are.

Best wishes,
Jerry

I guess limiting their less expensive whistles to just the hideously ugly cream color was not enough, now they go and raise the prices across the board. To counter the mixed opinions that their whistles get, one would think they’d want to make them more attractive instead of what they’ve decided to do.

I’m confused? I just looked at their site and it says they are available in black still.

They were probably doing maintenance of moving the server.
It’s working now.

The V-series Dublin is still avalable in black, but the S-series Dublin is not. To anyone contemplating a Susato S-series, I would recommend popping the extra 16 bucks for the tunable Kildare. I find it much easier to play and much more forgiving at the high end. It also looks way cooler and still comes in black.

But that’s what they want you to do (otherwise why would they have stopped making them in black?). I simply buy the hideously ugly whistle and accept the visual embarrassment, rather than pay nearly twice as much. There is a good side to it, in that I now have to focus even more on playing well, since people playing ugly instruments are scrutinized more. :boggle: I find them easy enough to play though. I saw someone mention that the Kildares can’t be tuned sharp, only flat, so that sealed the deal for me.

not everybody finds them ugly, apparently…

Thanks

It is worth noting that the Kildare has a conical bore whereas the Dublin is cylindrical, which is why the Kildare sounds nicer and is “more forgiving at the high end”.

Precisely. A Kildare is not just a tunable version of the Dublin; it’s a different whistle altogether. I never play with anyone and don’t really need to tune to anyone, but I use the Kildare instead of the Dublin anyway because it plays better.

I played the same songs on both the Dublin and Kildare Ds, switching back and forth between them so that I had a direct comparison. They both sounded the same to me, which is why I went with price as the deciding factor.

I don’t know who said that, but I’m afraid they’re wrong. Science to the rescue …

I just took my Kildare whistles at room temperature (70F/21C), pushed the head joints in as far as they go, and checked them against a calibrated (A440) electronic tuner. The results – ta-da!

Using normal breath pressure, the E, D and C whistles are 20-30 cents sharp across the range of the instruments. The Bb, A and G whistles are 10-20 cents sharp. Blowing harder added another 10-20 cents. Pulling the head joints out slightly brings them all back to A440, or flatter if you want. To me, this range seems reasonable for a small whistle. Beyond that, and the overall intonation may start to suffer.

In practical terms, sessions in my area sometimes tend to tune a bit sharp. The Kildares handle that up to A445 or more. Or in a chilly room, “pushing in” can help bring a cold / flat whistle back up to pitch.

So the Kildares can be tuned sharp. Glad you’re happy with yours, though!

I watched some videos on youtube from a guy that says he plays a susato. TinWhistler on youtube plays great and really inspired me even more. Of course my first inspiration came when I found that my ancestors were from Northern England, Scotland and Southern Ireland.

I am thinking of purchasing the 6 body set from the web site. Has anyone ever played those that are in that set?

KPW Set-04-S- One head sect.& all 6 bodies of -S- Series … 122.15

Thanks

I haven’t fiddled with the 6 body set, but I have a three body set (D, C, and B flat), and I can’t imagine there would be much difference other than the number of tubes. The pieces interchange nicely, and there is no difference in quality between the various tubes. The joint seals well with no leakage, and if you keep some cork grease on that O-ring, it will probably last forever. It’s actually pretty forgiving about maintenance.

In short, if you have a D Kildare and like it, you’ll like the set, but if you don’t like Susatos to start with, this won’t make you start liking them.

I already had one D Kildare, and the parts are consistent enough that it is interchangeable with the new set. I have lately been rather taken with the B flat.

I just got three Susatos from Grey Larsen: a V series D, an M series Bb and an L series E.

The D is great, very easy to play. Not too loud, nice to play by myself. Thinner sound than the S series (of which i have a 12-year old example), quieter and easier to control the upper octave.

The Bb is a cannon – sounds great but really loud I’m still learning to control it.

The E is also a lot of fun, pretty well balanced and easy to play. I haven’t been playing a lot of low whistle so i can’t compare it to others but it seems like a good choice especially for oddball keys for which you mightn’t want to fork over the money for a Burke, Overton, Copeland or whatever.

After spending time particularly on the low E, i notice that the S series high D is easier to control in terms of dynamics. Also i found an alternate fingering for hi B (really C#) on the E whistle, which is overblowing xxxxxo to get the 5th harmonic; i’m able to fake the high note so it’s not so piercing on tunes like “Toss the Feathers”. It works on a couple of other whistles too, though not on all of them.

Here’s another Cormac Breatnach video from YouTube on a Susato Kildare in that “awful color” - with Vanessa Williams!

This one was down the list presented from the link rh posted a ways.

I happen to like the color, actually - though I didn’t get the engraving on my three-tube (D, C Bb) set when I got it…

I think I need to go up to the next bore size for Bb, but the D and C are quite nice and I wonder why I don’t play them more every time I do.
