So Cal Spring Tionól with David Power

The Southern California Uilleann Pipers Club will have a Spring Tionól this year over the weekend of March 31th and April 1st, 2007.

Our guest piper will be David Power.

Further details available at www.socalpipers.com

Please register as soon as you can as the pre-registration deadline is looming.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there.

Pat.

I haven’t met David, never mind knowing what he’s like as a teacher. I only know him through his two CDs.

But my hunch is that anyone who plays like that has to be good at sharing the music. If you’re within striking distance, go there and absorb it. That’s how Séamus Ennis passed it on.

Anything more that you might pick up through more formal tuition should be regarded as a bonus.

David is a really nice guy and an exceptional teacher. His piping has a marvelous “old” sound to it which I suppose one could attribute to his great musicality and ear. All this makes it a pleasure to recieve tutelage from him as well as hear him perform. Looking foward to being there.

great!

Just a reminder, the pre-reg deadline is tomorrow (March 15). I’ll accept registrations postmarked by that date, so there’s still time

Just put my check in the mail this morning. The pony express might make there before the Tionel.

Look out! A sizable contingent (excluding Baxter’s I’m afraid) from the Salt Lake Piper’s Club will be decending upon ye!

Actually, can we arrange for the SoCal club limo to pick us up at the airport?

I hope David is not too jet lagged when he arrives, although several pints of Guiness and a few whiskey’s will most likely set him right!

Thanks to you folks for arranging all this. We’re looking forward to meeting ya all.

John-

Check your PMs.

PS–No Baxter? What am I supposed to do with all the Purina llama chow?

I wish I could be there–sigh…

To the Utah guys- anyone bring flyrods? we could do a fly tying seminar and go do some surf fishing. 8wts or better. David and I swapped fishing stories in Seattle a few years ago.

Fel, that sounds grand. Although I must confess that I’m not much of a fisherman anymore, and I don’t realy have an adequate fly-rod. But I’d love to check it out anyways, time permitting. Maybe we could combine surfing, piping and fly fishing all at once.

I did take David fly fishing last June after our Tionel here and we had a great time, I know he would love to go fishing. I imagine he is planning on taking in some fly fishing while in New Zealand.

See ya there!
John.

I don’t own a fly-rod, but I wouldn’t mind a seminar in tying one on. Having lived Behind the Zion Curtain for 10 yrs., I’m a bit rusty.

Plenty of pipers will be tying one on at the Tionól, especially Friday and Saturday nights.

There are pics on the Southern California Pipers Club site. It was a great time, David was in good form, albeit his tenor drone was acting up. He sang and played fiddle (mine and John). Thanks to Gabriel, Eileen, Larry, and the lads from behing the Zion Curtain. Legendary tales will be made about the craic on Saturday night.

Looks like Larry was the main attraction from the pics.

For those of you fortunate enough to hear David’s playing of the “Foxchase” in Seattle:

As presumptuous this many be;

That particular performance-to my ears is THE quintessesntial performance of that tune…BAR NONE!

This recording is “floating around” (as James Kelly says), and all I can say is seek it out!

(however, please don’t email me for it

MIke…this guy…this guy…Please

The guys from behind the zion curtain were a hoot as well. Actually, its Gaby that was the star. But, that is stuff for legends.

This guy…

Sounds like I missed a heck of a time. Being both pennyless and chanterless made it so unfortunately. Fill us in on more of the events.

Oh the famous Daye-less panny-less chanter

Forgive me Dave, they know not what they do…

Crazy Bastards! Especially that lot from Utah I mean what sort of peop…oh, uh…wait…nevermind.

I’ll be writing up a brief review for the SCUPC website soon (assuring that according to historical records, I was indeed the main attraction).

Stay tuned,
