Regulator rushes

How far can one effectively drop the pitch of the tenor reg C key by blue-tacking the rush, before the hole is too blocked off to sound at all? Half-step? More? Less? I’m just looking for a ball park estimate. Thanks.

I think that more information is required here… how far off tune is the note at present, without the rush installed?

I have never been able to sneak up on a regulator.

If you constrict the bore under the hole so much that it starts to effect the ease of attack, the rest of the reg notes are likely to go wonky too.

It’s better to distribute the bore perturbation over a longer distance - try extending a thin rush for 2 or 3 cm above the C, and spread your blu-tack or other constricting material over that distance. Also, first try pulling the reed out (which should flatten the C more than the other notes). As you no doubt have discovered, anything that flattens the C appreciably is likely to flatten the other notes as well, to a lesser extent.

If your C is still sharp, you could try a bit of tape over the tonehole, but bear in mind that this could make the note more prone to squeaking and/or jumping the octave.

Thanks for the replies. I’m actually trying to raise the pitch of the F# G and A by nearly a half-step to get them near concert pitch, but then I’m going to have to flatten the B and C.

I think you have to go to your pipemaker
I recently removed all rushes and the regulators are doing great
thank you Marc
