Question about drones.

I will consider him! Thanks!

Does Joe Kennedy Make C# drones?

Yes, Joe makes pretty much all flat pitches. You might be waiting a while for just drones though, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

It seems like you’re ready to get any old set of drones. Don’t. To state the glaringly obvious: Make an informed decision. One set of drones is not the next one. Do a bit of legwork: Listen to drones by different makers (in the key you’re looking for) in the flesh. Get drones you like, get drones that complement your chanter and the overall tonality you’re looking for.

Hear hear.

In theory, any “reputable” pipemaker should be able to make a stand of drones that complement your chanter’s tone and volume. But in practice, I would think you’ll be more likely to get a proper match if you choose a maker know to have already made something that’s in the right ballpark.

There are wide variations in tone color and volume between different makers’ sets (and in some cases, I’m sure, between different models by the same maker). E.g., my Koehler C chanter is (relatively) louder and brighter sounding than my dark, quiet Haneman C# chanter, even though C# is allegedly a “brighter key” than C.

Good luck,
Mick

Ennischanter,
who made your chanter?
Ideally you should have the maker of the chanter make you drones. But that may not always be possible.

Whoever you choose you should send them your chanter so they can balance up the drones with the chanter, when the time comes.

Tommy

My chanter is a Lawrence/Hunter C# African black-wood chanter. It sounds a lot like the chanter in The Wandering Minstrel, maybe a little bit brighter sounding though, especially at the bottom D. I would consider Hunter pipes again, but I heard that their waiting list is closed.

Sam’s a great guy to deal with. The Hunterpipes website suggests that he’s still taking orders.
