Yes, I know there’s 9,000 of these threads, but none where I have given my personal praise to a maker. A session friend just bought the 8-keyed Casey Burns flute from Doc.
I was excited to try it out, since I’m wanting a folk flute and I’ve read on the site that Casey puts the same QA into the folk flutes as he does the higher-end flutes.
Well, that keyed flute was bloody wonderful! I’m done perusing makers that might make me a good session flute. My money, when I some to spare, will be going to Casey for a Folk Flute!
Still got to get off my butt and try to get my banjo sold, which should finance this endeavor, since I assume Casey is not in the bartering business!
Hi,
Was that the Casey Burns with the nice aluminum flight case?
If so, it is indeed a nice playing flute.
JD
It is (the one without the functional c foot keys). I loved the tone from it, every bit as nice-sounding as the Olwell my friend also has.
I was told by Casey (he knows me and the flute) that it is one of his early keyed flutes, perhaps his first. I loved it, but nerve problems have forced me to move to a silver Boehm system flute.
Tell your friend to take really good care of it, or I’ll find out! Seriously, I’m thrilled it found a good home with a C&F’er. Doc is marvelous to deal with, a true gentleman, and, as they say in Yorkshire," A fine Vitinery."
Where are you two located, I’d love to come to your session sometime and hear it!

Well, I think I remember a time not too long ago when Casey was looking for a clarinet and/or guitar and was open to bartering. Banjo…probably not, but you never know.
Casey Burns is a real pro., no doubt!
JD, we’re in Auburn, Alabama. If you’re ever in the area, come on out!
I love my ff. It is truly a great flute, and I have played a lot of flutes.
Do it! Buy that FF! I just got mine this Saturday and I’m absolutely thrilled with it. It’s so much easier and forgiving about embouchure than the old Boehm I was trying to learn on, that even this beginner is getting nice solid tones even on low D. If I ever progress far enough to need a keyed flute he’ll definitely be the first person on my list of makers.
yup i echo that sentiment. it was just about a month ago that the third section of my folk flute broke by buttock. i enquired for a replacement joint and casey graciously sent me one within a couple of weeks. he usually charges for replacements, but that time, i just had to pay shipping!
