Poultry in Motion

I’ve been away for a while. Wanted to let you know what I’ve been up to…
mostly, hangin’ with my peeps

This is Lydia, Brianna and Loreena McNugget!
We got them last spring. My son was making the adjustment to private school and was feeling kinda low.
I figured, all that feathery cuteness would cheer him up.

Tastes like chicken!

When they got a bit older we discovered they could run…faster than a speeding pullet

Here’s how they look now!

They’re Auraucana hybrids, and lay pale green eggs

They are actually quite good with ham.

This is the first I’ve ever had chickens. We have several other kinds of birds in our aviary

and the chickens are really different. For one thing, they like to dig holes, and take dust baths.
And another thing, they use really fowl language.

I see what happened here. This little fellow misread the title as “The Swift” instead of “The Shift”. Now he’s carefully read as far as line 3 and is beginning to realize he’s been had.

ack! pale green? No one cares what color they are!

how often, what size?

down to my last chicken… :sniffle:

Quite possible!
BTW, This is her favorite CD…

About a dozen a week…a little smaller than store-bought
Very deep yellow yolks!

down to my last chicken… > :sniffle:

You need to get some of these – they’d stand up to the coyotes real well

Silkies are popular here. The Red-tails like 'em as do the foxes and raccoons.

ah, I believe we call that medium out here…

couple o’questions:
isn’t egg size a bit challenging?
how does one collect eggs if it gets broody?
what do they taste like? (had ducks, found the eggs rather boring…large, but boring)

Thanks

oh, I’ve a picture of one of 'em helping the wife with pony training… I’ll fetch it

The Jack Horner variety tends to do a little better with predators

Yeah, they’re about the size of a beach ball

how does one collect eggs if it gets broody?

Very carefully :open_mouth:

what do they taste like?

Apparently, silkies have “blue” meat!
Link says they taste a bit gamier

Are ya sure that ain’t the “Sue Hendrickson” variety? Silkies all look like “Sue” ta me, never cared for all those extra toes.

Green eggs? All we need now is the ham!

All fresh hams are green. They can be a little trichy to eat.

ah, just use the tractor then

And this would be Clarice, I take it?

…actually, her name is Spot!
From Shakespeare you know. (Out, out, d@mn etc)

So nice to have a well-birded post from you Caroluna! Hope things are going well.

It’s great to hear from you, Carol. Sounds like you’re having fun. Alas, we can’t keep chickens here, and the in-laws have lost their last couple of broods to foxes/raccoons/coyotes.

:tomato:

That’s too bad – I’m sure you guys would do a great job with them!

Speaking of livestock… are you going to raise another batch of those giant caterpillars this spring?

You have to be careful - the concept of livestock could get a bit switched around with projects like that.

And it just gets worse from there… :boggle:
