Playing while sick

Anyone else afraid to play their flute while battling a bug? I feel like if I play today (I’m home from work with a 100 degree temp), I’m going to infest my flute with my germs, and they’ll just live there until the next time I play, healthy or not.

Someone help me allay my fears!

Yep, I’m the same way with my wooden flute (I picture it’s oiled body to be a virtual petrie dish for any virus).

You obviously need a delrin/PVC flute…just wash after playing and you’re fine!

I think it’s like, if you feel worse doing it, don’t.
Blowing is exertion, no question.

You can disinfect with alcohol.

Oh, yeah, I have my Tipple in my car. I actually never thought about “washing” it. Now I just have to crawl down the stairs, out into the cold, and retrieve the beastie.

On second thought, maybe I’ll just take another nap.

My wife always says she knows I’m really sick because she gets a few days of peace and quiet…

One of my housemates was sick this weekend - she didn;t tell me until last nght, so apparetly I had kept her up with my playing.

Sure! Glad to help!

  1. The bugs aren’t going to live that long–they aren’t that durable.
  2. You’re already infected–you can’t get “more” infected.
  3. By the time you’re over this, you’ll be immune to them.

Just don’t let somebody else play your flute.

Or let the bodhran player have a go at it

You can always wear one of them “first aid resuscitation masks”. You’ll look a bit stupid at the session, but you will have plenty of space around you.

Day 2 of the flu from hell.

I tried to play yesterday, got through about 5 minutes of warming up, and almost passed out. I’m afraid by the time I get my strength back, I will have taken a couple of steps backward with my embouchure.

Oh well. Poor me.
(cue sad-sounding string section …)

I was down for a month last year with pneumonia. It took a week or two to get the embouchure back, then another month+ to get my wind back. I felt lucky this year, “only” bronchitis, which set me back a couple of weeks. The thing that cheesed me off was that I got sick couple of weeks before my first lesson with Chris Norman – nothing like pausing for breath in the middle of a jig when showing him how I play.
