Pipes maintenance in Ireland.

Who are the go to people for reeding and small repairs in Ireland these days?

Across the whole country but ideally in the west.

Who made the pipes? And what small repairs are to be done?

Brian Howard chanter and unknown drones.

Chanter reeds could do with being looked at, and drones are currently unreeded. Also, connection between bag and bellows requires some sort of harmonisation in terms of being made to fit together.

You could try John Butler in Achill, Seán Talty in Miltown Malbay or Derrick Gleeson in Coore maybe?

It’s probably a good idea to look at people more used to dealing with Howard style chanters etc. Mickey Dunne in Limerick perhaps? Jim Wenham?

Have a look at the list of makers at NPU, phone a few people to see who is willing to take on your job.

I believe that Pipedreams in Glasgow - the makers of eezydrone reeds, get their Uilleann reeds from Brian Howard.

Glad to see you’re still around, being helpful as usual.

Is a broken drone switch the sort of thing that can be fixed? The lever has broken off.

If you still have the broken off piece and feel comfortable removing the drone switch from the main stock (not a big or risky operation), you can take it to anyone capable of hard soldering, e.g., a jeweler, and they should be able to fix that for you in short order and for not a lot of money.

To remove the drone switch from your main stock loosen and remove the nut on the bag end of the metal disk (often a coin), then the disk and carefully pull the assembly out of the main stock from the other end. To get a good purchase on it you should remove the drones and regulators (if you have them).

There may be a cylinder of cork in the center of the main stock (I think that it’s called the bladder by pipe makers) that creates a good seal for the rod of the drone switch assembly. When you put it back together you may want to apply a little beeswax or cork grease to it to assure movement and a good seal (some rods will have a recess milled into them for a little hemp wrapping that ensures the same thing).

Good luck!

Thanks for that.

You’re welcome.

Just to be clear (there was a time when I didn’t know that there were two kinds of soldering): soft soldering is what’s usually done on electronics gear with a soldering iron and the little coil of soft soldering (that’s not what you want); what you want — hard soldering— is applying silver soldering with a butane or (more likely) propane or acetylene torch. Jewlers do that all the time making and fixing jewelry.
