pipers seat?

Erm bit of a daft question, but what kind of seat/stool do any of you recommend? I cant just seem to get sitting properly on my couch/easy chair, and any of the kitchen chairs or stools seem to be too low.
Is there a recommended height? ie stool seat height up to back of knees while standing???

The only stool i ever felt comfortable on was a rickety kind of botchy one that was in the Seamus Ennis centre while under Billh tuiution.
Any chance of robbing that stool for me Billh??

Much appreciated.

This has come up several times. Some recommend getting a dedicated piping chair at just the right height for you leg length, with the seat tilted so you can sit upright so that the drones and regs are slanted on your lap at just the right angle. If you are only ever going to pipe in this special chair this is a good way to go.

Personally, I feel you should get used to sitting on as plain a chair or bench as you are likely to find wherever you regularly pipe (session, pub, etc.) and get used to piping in that position.

Measure the height of the chair to your leg. If the top the seat is below your knee don’t get it. I am always on the lookout for chairs that are at or above my knee height… it puts the pipes in a much better playing position.

Any view on foot-rest?

Patrick,
I thought for sure that you’d have one of Gabriel’s carved chairs to sit upon when holding the Holy Order in your lap!

djm is right, this has been discussed before. I remember someone finding a perfect stool on the ikea website. Having been to ikea many times myself, my local ikea has a lot of piper friendly looking stools and chairs, some for as little as $20Cdn. I believe I heard that ikea is coming to Ireland or has come or that planning permission was granted or some such. So hope is in sight.

most topics have been discussed before. I use a gas-lift adjustagble office chair, padded, armless, easily monouvered, and you can spin around and around between tunes pretending to show your appreciation to an imaginary audience sitting in the round

Working on it Dave… working on it

Sounds like a great name for a CD: The Piper’s Stool.

Subtitled “A Steaming, Hot Pile”

I just entered the bellows pipe world (border pipes so the drones on the lap thing isn’t an issue) and a co-worker gave me an Ikea “Traktor” stool like the one below except mine is “John Deere” green. I still haven’t bought my safety triangle to hang on the back.

I found a short bar stool in the local Dollar General store that is just right for me.

I use my (armless) computer chair when at home, though. I can take the back off of it and adjust it for a perfect height, plus it is padded and has a sort of “shock absorber” feel to it when you first sit.

My son has a drummer’s stool that works great as well. It has the most padding I have seen.

As I mentioned above

That’s a few bucks more than the $6 I spent on mine!

The other BIG consideration is that the chair should have little to no back support. If you find a chair with a back that’s too wide, it will interfere with the bellows/bag motion. I like a back to my chair as when I’m not playing, I can sit back and relax whilst enjoying a sip of the bubbly.

Just got me a chair that meets the knee positioning requirements described in UPs Vol.I Its a small bar stool

A drummer’s throne with a small backrest (Gibraltar) works very well for me. Its seat is bicycle seat shaped so there is plenty of leg room, and the backrest is small enough to provide clearance, yet adjustable to find the perfect position. You can find them for about 100.00 dollars or so (ebay, music stores, etc.) Height is adjustable as well, and you can take it with you when needed. And comfortable to boot.

An adjustable (computer) chair is ideal, and available everywhere. Remove the arms (if it has arms), and the rest is adjustable - seat height, seat tilt, back-rest height and angle.

This is what I use:

Great!

My brother played drums for about 20 years and his 1976 Pearl set is in my mom and dad’s garage…I thinks I be making a trip over there and grabbing it tonight…
