About the foot…man, that’s gotta hurt.
Anybody ever try one of these modified walking sticks? I just tried playing standing up with my foot at that height and the regulator keys were much easier to access.
Looks highly likely that it could be Jem to me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo of John Doran Snr? They have similar jaw lines and brows. Both chanter enter the bag in a similar fashion but the photo of Jem as an older man has him with regs… maybe a later addition? They aboth are wearing a similar style long jackey too… representative of the style of the time and possibly his own personal taste.
Hmm… it’s a beautiful image whomever the piper and family might be.

There’s a photo of John Sr. in the liner notes of the NPU Doran CD. He has the leg up as well, resting on the pipe case.
In an old An Piobarie there’s an account of Dinney Delaney, the Galway piper; it mentions that in the old days, pipers carried their instruments around in a “blue buttoned bag,” and that pipe cases seemed to be a 20th century development.
