Peter Hunter

I know next-to-nothing about this maker - heard a recording of Sean Og Potts playing a D chanter made by him though, and thought the sound was really great! Great tuning and rich, full tone combined with Mr. Potts’ beautiful playing - amazing! I’m sure someone out there knows something - is he still making pipes? Any info at all would be most appreciated!

Ben

He “retired” from pipemaking some years ago. If you run across his gear secondhand (not likely) it’s worth gambling a few bucks on it to see if it’s any good. It usually is.

I recently heard a “B” chanter he made back around 1990(?), it had a great tone. Very sweet.

Stefan Kayat, a uilleann piper here in Sweden, picked up a set of drones from Peter just before Willie Week this year (2004). I believe he said he stayed a few days whilst Peter got the drones finished off. Stefan already had a Hunter chanter, so now he has the drones to go with it. He did mention that a “laid back” atmosphere ruled the work shop whilst he was there, but Peter’s still operative.

I got the impression he operates part time and under the radar - making stuff part-time for friends and old customers and at his own pace. It didn’t sound like he was taking new work orders from abroad.

Learn something every day.

How might one get in touch with him, Steampacket? I’m particularly interested in his concert pitch chanters - suppose he’d be willing to make one for an underling?

Yes he certainly is a dark horse  Hmm I think your right, it all depends if your face fits along with one or two other things.

Hi,

As far as I am aware Peter is still at the address given on the NPU website.

I have a concert D chanter he made me about 10 years ago when my Williams was going through a bad patch reed wise. The Williams came good again so I never pursued getting Peter’s chanter properly reeded. Maybe I should get a proper reed done out of curiosity.

Peter is a unique person and an outstanding maker. Just watching him work is amazing, his superb wood and metal working skills producing beautiful pipes.

So, does anyone have sound clips of a Hunter chanter?

elbogo, both potts and ronan browne play hunter chanters on the drones and the chanters vol 2. I think that Becky Taylor plays a hunter set too

Ah, yes, Becky does! I was just listening to her play on sound clips again at her website. Great sound, and she’s a really wonderful piper.

I’ll have to check Ronan’s liner notes again!

Thanks Seanny!!

Hey Elbogo,

There are a couple of clips of Robbie Hannan playing MY Peter Hunter B set on the SCUPC site:

I thought Becky Taylor played on a old Crawley Set.

I play an older (not sure of the exact date) Hunter chanter with a Pat Sky reed, and I adore it, though it does not belong to me. I would say that it is comprable to a Quinn chanter that a friend plays. If anyone has contact info. for Hunter, I would really like to have it, or if there is a set of his drones out there that sombody’s trying to sell. Also, if anyone knows anything about an English maker called Mark Dixon, he was an apprintace to Hunter and the real owner of my chanter (but I hardly know him, and haven’t seen or heard from him in several years)
thanks, Jack Devereux

I should point out that Peter is not active as a pipemaker at the present time. I am making pipes to Peter’s designs under his expert eye - currently underway is a Concert half set in cocobolo and a B chanter also in cocobolo. I am open to enquiries! Peter has forgotten more about bagpipes than most people will ever know . . . .
