The costs involved in doing Chiff & Fipple are increasing and I’m thinking of asking for people to consider being “patrons.” Patrons would agree to donate a small amount of money every month or once a year. My idea it to keep it low because a large number of small donors is better than a few large donors. (I’m a Democrat).
Like $1/month. Something most people wouldn’t miss.
I’d add patrons names on the website and at the end of every newsletter.
Being a Fascist I think we should find the weakest guy and beat the hell out of him til he pays. But on second thought I think your idea may have more merit. How about a quarterly/yearly pledge drive? Maybe we could get Jerry Lewis or Jerry Freeman or maybe Tom and Jerry. Seriously, this should not be a financial burden on one person when we all participate and benefit. I like the voluntary idea.

Dang, Communist all over this place. Nothing but talk about unions. Next thing we’ll be strikin’. How the corprations supposed to move to China with all this stikin’ and union talk?
Sounds good to me. In the true spirit of patronage, though, I insist on the “Martha Stewart’s Chiff and Fipple” being renamed “Boo’s Martha Stewart’s Chiff and Fipple.” Ahhh…slips right off the tongue.
I’m in. Just let us know, and I am sure there are a LOT of people willing to step up to the plate (that’s a baseball idiom, for all you international types…)
I’d be willing to pay extra if that means I won’t get included in the newsletter.
Something like this came up before when I suggested that donations might be roughly based on number of posts: Say, a cent a post in annual donations. Let’s the lurkers off cheap, of course.
Just on the practical side, though, and speaking from just my own point of view:
I would find it much easier to make one annual donation, or one donation every six months, than to fiddle around with PayPal or whatever 12 times a year.
I will not remember to do it, probably, unless reminded.
If you think this might be true for others, I’d suggest you post one or two calls for patron donations per year.
Once a year, by pay pal. Remind people how much they pay for whistles.
I’m gonna tell that chicken to pay my donation for next year and see what happens.
I wouldn’t need my name in the newsletter. It would be enough if non-paying users would be forced to kneel and say “hail, most honoured patron” three times when i pass them on the street.
