I’m sorry to ask this question here, but I know absolutely nothing about guitars and I know several of you are very knowledgeable in this area and I trust your advice.
I just bought a guitar…the brand is “Kona acoustic.” It is nice-looking and is a left-handed guitar (perfect for me). I was wondering if this is an OK brand or piece of junk, and also if any of you have good recommendations of beginner books or websites I could go to to start teaching myself.
You should come out to the Monday night sessions and talk with Tom who owns Local Music here in town. He’d pretty much the end-all be-all as far as acoustic stringed instrument knowledge in the valley.
if it sounds good to your ear and it’s comfortable to play then it’s a great guitar regardless of the brand. just about any acoustic guitar can be set up for left handed use, especially cheaper ones that don’t have a compensated saddle, you simple flip the saddle around and get a get the nut replaced with a lefty one and then switch the strings around. you may find it better playing it right handed though since if you go to a high end guitar you’re not limiting yourself, that and it’ll make it easier if you ever want to play any other stringed instruments.
Thanks a lot, everyone! I really appreciate the replies.
Brian, I’ve actually met Tom before…I went to his shop a year or so ago for some whistles. I was very impressed with his knowledge and his friendliness…seems like a very good guy. I would really like to come to one of those Monday night sessions one of these days.
Dan,
Thanks for the heads-up about the info and links…I appreciate it! I’ve bookmarked the links and I will enjoy going through them. Thanks again!
