Olwell Keyless Boxwood Bb.

Spotted this one on ebay U.S.A. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Patrick-Olwell-Bb-flute-boxwood-with-silver-rings-/272233520389?hash=item3f6261dd05:g:LtUAAOSwubRXKtdg

Now that’s what I call a flute.

Oh, my…

Curious to see what it goes for. I’m currently on the list for an Olwell keyless and he quoted me 8 months wait, which is really not bad.

Eight months is not bad at all, I’ve heard Olwell usually quotes a year’s wait.

Yeah, he said that normally his wait list was a year for keyless but that right now it is closer to 8 months. Which suits me fine. Also got on his keyed flute list I figure that in 6-10 years I will be ready for it.

That’s almost exactly the flute that made me buy a boxwood Bb (mine is from Chris Wilkes, with four keys). Seamus Egan has one of these; boxwood, keyless, with unlined head and no tuning slide. I can’t tell from the image whether the headjoint is lined or not. When I heard Seamus play his in a concert I knew I had to have one. Boxwood and Bb are made for each other, I think.

Unlined head.

Patrick has told me that he favors boxwood for Bb flutes. I had one of his Bb flutes made of blackwood, but it turned out I wasn’t playing it–a bit big for me. I have a Casey Burns boxwood C, which is very good; about as big as I’m going to go.

My boxwood Bb flute weighs less than my blackwood D flute.

On the other hand, warping is a problem with boxwood: my boxwood Bb flute doesn’t warp in the typical banana style, but instead the tenons warp into ovals. That makes it really hard to put the flute together in dry weather. If I put the flute in a humidified box, the tenons go back to being round in a few hours.

If Bb and boxwood go together, I guess B and dogwood, do, too

My (8-key, and yes I use them for just traditional irish music) B flute is about the same weight as my D flute, but of course all that metal is where the weight is!

Essentially the same motivation for me Brad, except I heard Seamus playing the Boxwood Bb on a recording before seeing him play live. This is the only video clip I’ve seen of Seamus playing his Boxwood Bb. Shame about the additional piano noodling, the recorded version without the piano is more powerful, IMO. Any way, still worth a view and listen for fans of Low flutes. http://youtu.be/Nt7AzgKAk8c
