With a Coyne? chanter too ?
What’s the story on the chanter with the closures for the regular tone holes?
David
do you think if i bought those, they would be playable if i fixed them up?
What’s the story on the chanter with the closures for the regular tone holes?
Patsy Brown is the most likely contender for the chanter with the use of flute keys to cover the open tone holes.

Yes - from the photos there are a few repairs needed - Bass Drone tenon is snapped and a key guide block is broken on the chanter top piece. Would need at least a more detailed set of photos to assess fully how much work is required as personal examination is rather difficult from the UK
Interesting mix of styles - Bass regulator has the usual Taylor tabs for holding the keys whereas Tenor and Baritone hace folded keys. Double Bass is reminiscent of the set owned by Rolf Knusel.
Have put on a token bid just in case
Chris
The bass does have the tabs but the maker has used the folded keys anyway. Wonder if it’s stamped anywhere. P. Brown seems likely with the flute keys. Nifty old yoke. Funny coincidence but I was telling some fellows today about Patsy making reeds from shim stock metal, and using ivory from the Boston zoo.
That does look like a Coyne - wish we could see the front of the thing, wonder if it’s been mucked about on the inside too. Looks maybe 15 1/2 or 16".
Probably not the chanter - I doubt those keysprings are still working properly, and there’s not much call for flute-key closures. Looks like there are a couple of other concert pitch chanters to choose from in the lot though.
I’m dubious about the “I fixed them up” part… I hope you mean “if I had them fixed up”, since repairs on instruments such as this, beyond re-hemping and gentle cleaning, should be left to experienced makers I think. (No offense intended)
Rats, the second Taylor and Taylor style in as many days. God is punishing me.
I’ve heard of people converting old chanters into regulators. Could this have been tried in this case?
A thousand dollars already and still nine days to go!!!
My guess is ,it will go for $5985 .
Anyone having a guess promises to send a euro to the one who guesses the nearest to the final winning bid !!
RORY
And there’s no reserve on this! Someone is really going to get a deal if it goes for what you say.
At least double that amount to overhaul the thing and ask yourself if it’s still a great deal. Wouldn’t mind the Coyne chanter though
Heck, that’s half the fun of the whole thing! That alone will be worth the cost of admission!
Excuse me while I go increase my bid…
Interesting looking beast - so really a project for restoration ideal for a maker. Who then is mystery bidder 6 ? Now Ebay is hiding the details - maker, player. museum, collector ?
Have put on a token bid just in case
I wonder - he likes to make in this style
Place your bets now - 9 days to go and looking likely to go high
John
Good on you and good luck!
I’d love to have a look at 'em. They look like Brown’s work.
Be careful with what you assume when bidding on them. These sets are rarely untouched and playable without a herculean ammount of work. The7 The “coyne” chanter is of questionable origin. Anyone can make a chanter that LOOKS like a Coyne.
IF anyone here DOES win the set, please don’t attempt any refurbishing work yourself..it’s simply not* as easy as it might seem. Personally, of all the living pipemaker’s in the world, I’d would only trust David Quinn with the rebuilding of a set like this. But that’s just my unasked for opinion! (heh!)
so really a project for restoration ideal for a maker
It good to realise most makers hate jobs like overhauling a set like this. It’s a tremendous amount of work and figuring out things. The end result is pretty much unpredictable. Just getting on with the routine of making new sets is much more likely to get the food on the table. I know several stories of sets with extended regulators and unusual features non of the top makers would touch.
And even if someone would pull it off for you, you’re still not quite looking at a top of the range set.

And why would would the origin of this bit of the lot be more questionable than the rest of it?
Anyone can make a chanter looking like a Coyne but as things stand, very few, if any, actually did. It’s the only bit in the lot that might be really nice, if Patsy Browne kept his reamers out of it anyway. If you’d give me a choice between picking that chanter or the rest of it I wouldn’t go for the heavy metal, that much I know.
That’s the scary bit. Eek!
I can’t help but worry that the winner of this auction will find out too late just what Peter is talking about - that is, unless the winner bidder is savvy enough to know this already and is equipped to do the work needed (or has someone lined up to do it). Definitely a gamble for a set like this, and at this rate it looks like the price may climb above the “take a chance on it” range.
Peter is right
let it go
let it go
farewell
So far, people have mentioned Coyne and Brown. The eBay auction doesn’t mention anything about who the makers are. Where are you guys getting your information?
BTW, I thought Coyne was known for copying other makers. Why might the chanter in question not be of another maker?
