I noticed that Tony Dixon has lowered the price of its 3 pieces polymer flute, down
to around $ 200.00. It can be purchased either direcxtly from him or from North Art Heritage Music in Canada (they sell it for US $ 195.00). I got one today, and after having played it for a couple of hours, I can tell that Dixon has a winner in his hands. The flute looks great (with new brass rings instead of the old plastic ones), and plays great. Very easy to play, great mellow tone. I relaly like it.
By the way, I also purchased the additional whistle head ( a novelty) that can replace the flute head and transforms the flute into a tapered low D whistle.
The whistle has a great sound, very mellow, not particularly loud. The only problem (for me) is that it is too much a “soft blower”, i.e. it has very little back pressure, while I prefer "middle blowers’ like my Overton.
I heard, though, that Dixon is preparing an alternative whistle head for “middle blower”
whistle fans, with more backpressure.
I was impressed with the Dixon 3pc when I had a go on one on my last trip to Ireland. It had a very nice feel to it, the tone was quite mellow as you say, when pushed it was not really barking but more growly with a certain buzz to it. I very much enjoyed it, and $200 is a true bargain..
But on the other hand, for $200 you could get a few bottles of very good
whisky
I agree they’re nice flutes, and you can’t beat the price. His wooden ones (not sure if he makes them anymore) can be real gems. I sold mine to a professional flute player who said she preferred the dixons to seerys or M&Es.
While I’ll not go that far (I like all 3), the dixon is serious bang for the buck.
Hi all,
Im new on the site but Ive had a Dixon in D for about 4 years now and I would be keen to buy the whistle head. Anyone know where I can purchase one from ?
Thanks in anticipation

I went to look at North Art Heritage’s web site and they still show it for $299 (unless I’m looking in the wrong place). I also couldn’t figure out whether their prices were listed in US or Canadian dollars, but $299CAD is still about $240US. Did you talk to them by telephone? Any help you can provide will be appreciated.
I did notice the price on the Dixon web site was 140 Pounds, which is about $203US.
You can also order the new low D whistle head for the Dixon three pieces polymer flute on E Bay, at North Art Heritage Music (E Bay ID: Allegro37), a web store based in Canada. They are great guys with outstanding customer service, and have good prices.
Thanks for that, but Ive noticed that all the flutes on the site have a sort of barrel on the connection, mine is about 5 yrs old and has a straight connection, would the whistle head still fit?
thanks in anticipation

I just bought a Polymer Tenor Flute in D by Tony Dixon, i’m starting with the flute, so I wanted something cheap but that sounded good, so i think i made a good choice… any opinions? (It cost me £32 with shipping)
Whistle Bard - you’ve bought the one or two piece Dixon which is a cylindrical flute and not a conical flute like the 3 piece flute. You’ll have a more difficult finger stretch with the cyclindrical flute, and I think it’s a bit harder to play than a conical bore flute. It’s not that you can’t sound good on one, but it may take a little more work. It also may go slightly flat in the upper octave, so you may need to lip up the notes or roll out the flute slightly to sharpen it.
Cavefish - the 3 piece is thick like any wooden flute or like the seery/dixon, etc. The one or piece piece models are much thinner, but I haven’t seen one in quite some time so I don’t recall exactly how thick it is.
I find flute very hard to characterize. When I was taking lessons, my flute (an M&E) sounded remarkably like an antique Chappelle flute when my teacher played it, and his Chappelle sounded like my M&E when I played it. The player is so much of the sound with a flute. Check over at clips n’ snips on this page and search for Dixon: http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/flute.html
I can’t listen to any of these at work, so I’m not sure how good the quality is. I have two clips on there from 2003 when I had only been playing less than 2 years (so I know they’re not good). Listening to clips from different players on the same type of flute, though, can give some feel for how they sound.
