I found this site yesterday http://www.fullbodyburn.com/html/flutes/tinwhistle_music.htm

Welcome. There’s tremendous enjoyment to be gained from a whistle, especially if you put one end in your mouth.

If the whistle is making your mice blind, then take it out of the pint glass before drinking.

www.thesession.org might be a useful place for you.

There’s tremendous enjoyment to be gained from a ________, especially if you put one end in your mouth.

Now there’s an all-purpose phrase if I’ve ever heard one.

In that case, try “The Mice in the Bog”:

Now THAT is cool!

what a fruitful plethora of options, ripe for the picking! very kind of you all, ill be back in touch when im ready to melt your minds with my whistle abilities.

Cheers!

So are the scientists

I don’t play ITM, I just like the sound of the instruments. One of the other folks pointed me to this site. http://wikifonia.org/
What brought you to the whistle? What are you planning to do? Wadda you own/want to own? We’re nosey.

what brought me to the whistle was my inability to play a musical instrument and not wanting to pay more than a fiver! i have a feadog in D, but gettin kinda hooked, can play more than 3 blind mice but not much more, i cant read music that well, i have to listen to a song then try and work it out as well. im keen to get a low d whistle as this tin whistle is quite schreechy. maybe just becasue its cheap.

never really listened to irish music before, always been aware of the pogues but who hasnt.. its fun to play! better than saturday night tvanyway.

When it comes to the squeaking then it may not just be the whistle but having a look at the Whistle Tweaking pages may help settle the whistle down. And as it’s only a fiver, if you cock it up, well, no real damage done.
Any squeaking caused by yourself will come under control when you develop your embouchoure and learn to shape the air with your lips and mouth.

Low D’s are an entirely different beast. I’m not going to warn you off. It’s your choice. I’ve got a couple but have put them to one side until I’m more proficient on the high D but that’s just my choice.

BTW, I’ve only been playing for a year so this is just my opinion and experience. Others (as always in places like this) may well differ.

Oh! And I can’t read music either although I’m slowly getting some understanding as I progress.

without sounding big headed, its the whistle!!! it sounds as it should, and i like it, but others, (me mam) said its too shrill! i love the deep smooth sounds of the low. i had a go on my mates and loved it, found it relaxing to play as it needs hardly any breath at all, ive got pretty big hands too so no reaching trouble. id like one with a detachable mouth piece so i can try fife head too.

Well, yes and no … Squeaky is in the hands of the (be)holder. But the Feadóg D is aggressive with a lot of chirp, and the putty tweak does help to calm it down a bit.

no one recommended Ryan Duns’ site yet? http://www.tinwhistler.blogspot.com/

if you’re talking about a low whistle, and you put a “fife” head on it, you’re talking about playing the flute. dixon makes one, i’d recommend getting the conical bore body (instead of the cylindrical)–it costs more but it’s worth it, and you can get both a whistle and flute head for it.

if you really want a fife, sweetheart makes a d whistle that you can also get a fife head for.

cheers,
