new reed

I have new reed and it is quite goood with a lovely tone. The tuning is great apart from a very sharp upper octave a and b. I don’t mind the B as most are around as sharp as it anyway but the upper a is very sharp in comparison to other reeds I’ve had and annoying to the ear. The lower octave is spot on. Will it play more in tune in time? Or is there something I should do?

Rushing the staple is easy to try and is non destructive.

Put some thin wire in the staple with a small loop at the bottom to keep it in place. This will reduce the staple volume and flatten the higher notes. If you can bring down the A nd B without making the G and F# too flat it may be a solution.

It’s been suggested ( and my own experience seems to bear this out) that reducing the size of the upper part of the staple (and not the bottom) can help flatten the second octave A and B while leaving the lower hand more or less unchanged. Of course you may have to adjust the eye a bit to keep the blades open to the same degree, etc. but using more taper (in the conical, hand-rolled staple sense) may help.
