Here’s a nearly new Taylor GC8 guitar I recently purchased from another forum member.
And a reel I just recorded a few days ago, thumb-picking only…w/partial capo. I’ve never played a Taylor before, or used a capo like this, but love this GC8 model - rosewood/sitka–short scale.
The Black Haired Lass played in DADGAD without tuning any strings down on the guitar. Capo up the other 3 strings instead - on the 2nd fret - with partial capo.
Nice playing. I love those partial capos, I love the fact I can play in DADGAD more or less but have note that I can grab from below. I surprised they aren’t more popular.
In explaining/demoing partial capos and multiple capos to others, I’ve found that not everyone takes readily to the concept of being, in effect, in multiple tunings at once. One tuning in open positions, another in closed positions. It’s tricky.
O_G…I find the partials are not well known around my area. Capoed up to DADGAD is totally different than open tuning. In some ways I like it better. Glad you enjoyed the tunes!
I’ve done both. After seeing David Wilcox play a few times back in the late 80s and early 90s, I modified a few Kyser capos using my bench grinder. I think I made three. IIRC, one covered all but the 6th string, another covered 3 through 6, and the last covered 3 through 5. Haven’t played around with them in years but you’re right, using capos to achieve DADGAD would require different chord shapes than actually playing in DADGAD and end up being quite different.
Only just joined these forums and i’m rather impressed to actually find people using Partial Capos. Every time I use one I get people confused, asking me what it is (especially when i’m using a standard capo and a partial.) The joys of not having to tune between songs is just too good to miss out on and effectively being able to play in drop D (as long as your chords cover the top 2 strings) is a great touch as well! Also, putting the capo on “upside down” to give you an open A style tuning is also very interesting!
On topic however, lovely guitar and lovely playing! I play a taylor 310CE myself, but i’ve never found a Taylor I didn’t enjoy playing!
