Ever since my Burke G whistle was taken I’ve been wanting another G whistle. For awhile I didn’t know which one but now it seems I’ll buy a Reviol G in the near future. I’d heard about Maurice’s whistles but didn’t realize who he was until I saw his photo. Met him in Dingle when I was in the shop there in 2002.
The only thing I’m waiting for now is time to set aside the funds; hopefully 2-3 months max. In the meantime I’d appreciate hearing comments from anyone who has played one his G whistles; or even the F or A.
Thanks in advance,
Ben
Sorry my only experience was with a Reviol Low C/D/Eb set, one head with three bodies.
These whistles played very nicely! The thing that surprised me was that even though the three pitches shared the same bore and head, the Low C had that characteristic Low C sound, the Eb had that characteristic Eb sound… not at all what I expected, which was the same sound at three different pitches. No, they sounded like three entirely different instruments with three clearly different timbres.
This set was in a black rough finish (what I might call Parkerized) which wasn’t uncomfortable at all, but made the whistles easy to hold.

That mirrors my experience making high C/D/Eb sets, which makes sense considering how the length/bore effects the timbre.
Note to those making whistles: Even though some talk about the simple length/bore ratio this does not stay constant for different length whistles, a reasonable place to start is to research the pipe organ makers “rules of thumb” for scaling bore size. Or check out Hans’ page: http://music.bracker.co/Music/Searching_For_The_Optimal_Whistle_Bore or this page: http://www.navaching.com/shaku/scaling.html or this page: http://www.stephenbicknell.org/3.6.4.php and …
… google is sometimes your friend
Thanks for the responses. It will be a good whistle. I’ll just have to be patient until I have the funds. & I will!
