Sup everyone?
I’ve been working on the whistle for a while now (about 3 1/2 years) and I want to try the low whistle, preferably in D. Do you guys have any suggestions of a fairly cheap one that I can start out with?
Thanks
-Ross
Betcha 99% of the replies will be: The DIXON.
Yep to the Dixon but not if your stretch isn’t good. I can only play the Low D Shaw which has a tapered end and raised holes. (And slowly)
Dixon. A really nice whistle for the money. Just don’t expect to be heard. It is very quiet in the lower octave.
I’m not a real fan of Susato in general, but they do make a very cheap low D that is well thought of by many. The reason I’m suggesting it is that it’s only $42 so if you don’t like it, you’re not out a lot of money.
I agree on the Dixon. My first Low-D was a Dixon. I was pleased w/ the ease of play. I enjoy it very much but it is kind of quiet on the low end.
I think Dale Wisely (Ocean of Whistle Wisdom)recommends a low F for a first timer. I don’t own a low-F yet but like the way they sound on CLips & Snips.
The only thing about getting a low f is you’ll be playing it solo. If you want to play with others, you’ll need it to be a low d. Low f’s are very nice, however, and easier on the hands.

If you do get a Dixon, you may want to spend the couple extra bucks to get a tunable one. I bought a non-tunable Dixon low D, and it was terribly sharp, and increased in sharpness further up the scale. I was disappointed and sent it back for a refund, minus shipping both ways, of course. Cost me $10 to find out I didn’t like it.

I like the Kerry Low D ($64 at The Whistleshop). I add more teflon tape under the mouthpiece and get it to sound as good as it more expensive cousins, the Chieftain and Kerry Pro.

I use a Howard’s Low D… I get lots of compliments on it’s sound quality and it’s not hard to play. I managed to play a song my first time ever touching it.
There’s a Howard Low D whistle for sale for $50 on the Elderly Instruments web page.
