Looking for reasonably priced low G!

My brother, who is not a denizen of the C & F world phoned me tonight in the hopes that I might help him track down a low G. I said I know just where to ask around!

It’s an oddball size, and a basic web search leads, not surprisingly, to high end or limited production models…and they are, as such, pricey–often over $100.

Anyone know a good source for a low G for less $?

What’s oddball about a low G? Very comm and popular whistle key. Do you mean low G as the G between high D and low D?

If you do…how about?

Guido Gonzato

Susato - Dublin or Kildare model

Tony Dixon - several models to choose from. I happen to have a tunable polymer model here that I have not played. It’s available at a good price

There are others as well.

Or you can go cheap with a Becker based on the Gonzato design.

If you mean a bass G - below low D - you can always make one yourself.

Feadoggie

I mean its not the size one runs across in any corner music store.
The Becker looks like a viable option.
Thank you.

Yes, he’s looking for the size which is between the high and low Ds.

I’ve got G’s by Dixon and Susato. Both nice. Very different voices. The Dixon is nice and chiffy.

Whistle and Drum and Lark in the Morning offer the Dixons.

Emm, I’ve always been very pleased with my Susato Medium-bore low G. $76 direct from Susato.

Jerry Freeman’s G is excellent, as is Hans Bracker’s. Two very different characters, though.

Easy answer..

Just skip right over the susatos, dixons, etc etc and go for a Lofgren! His whistles are amazing, and his low G is even more amazing than his others. I’d without a doubt give it a very hefty recommendation.

In my opinion it sounds very much like the goldies, but I personally found it much friendlier to play, for me. It’s a bit higher priced than a susato, but much lower priced than many other high end whistles, yet up there with the best of them.

It’s very very good.

Second that!
Besides you can smirk later when you own a “pre fame” Löfgren you got for a song back in those days"

You may want to narrow it down with the qualities he is looking for.

Chiffness
Breathiness
Loudness/Beefiness
Purity
Air Pressure/Back Pressure
Timbre
Budget

Etc.

Angel

He plays with an assortment of things and is not a particular connoisseur of whistles and whistle-specific attributes.

Emmline, you’re back!

Becker whistles were suggested right away, and if budget is the main concern, that’s the way to go. i think the cheapest low (alto) G you can get.
here’s my quick review recently posted:

Get the Guido instructions and make him one. It’ll cost a couple of bucks and he’d love having something you made for him.

I tried a Jerry Freeman G based on the other excellent Freeman-tweaked whistles that I own. The c natural was wildly out of tune, so I returned it.

C natural as in XXX OOO? Or was that the F natural?

Just when I thought I was over WHOAD.
Now I find I can get 3 alto whistles for $41 shipped.

This kind of comment infuriates me.

“The Cnat was wildly out of tune so I returned it.”

I heard nothing about this. No chance to investigate the problem, no chance to fix something for the customer. All I get for my trouble is someone trashing my reputation.

Thank you very much.
Jerry

P.S. The last time I visited this board, someone had posted that he’d gone into a music store and found that one of my whistles had a cracked mouthpiece. Checked and found they ALL were cracked, and the store took them off the shelf. I determined that the store was Appalachian Bluegrass in Baltimore, the whistle was one where I laboriously bind and lacquer the socket so it can NEVER crack, and there was nothing defective at all about it or any of the whistles in the store.

I get the impression that people are oblivious to the fact that there’s an actual human being trying his damnedest to make really great whistles everyone can afford. It comes off as a sort of narcissistic, self-indulgent entertainment, taking potshots, mindless of the fact that you don’t know what you’re talking about, and you’re making it harder for someone to feed his children.

Oh dear Jerry…well, for what it’s worth, my brother has zeroed in on a Freeman-tweaked Generation, available at The Whistle Shop. So that’s the pick that is getting my strongest endorsement. As he likes his Generations, I think that’s what he’ll go with, especially since I’ve put in an emphatic plug for the Freeman tweakedness.

I like the JF tweaked whistles as well. I have them all (I think).

Not to mention that there’s a lot of ways to play a c natural, and which one works best varies from whistle to whistle.

EDIT: of course I mean the equivalent of c natural on an a whistle.
