Does anyone have a Sindt A whistle that they’re looking to or wouldn’t mind parting with? My only current A whistle is a Chieftain tunable and while it’s a good whistle I think I’d much prefer a Sindt. I’d be willing to consider trading that or a Burke DAN for a Sindt… even though these two whistles are each more expensive than a Sindt, It may be a worthy trade to me if the Sindt was in new condition.
My Chieftain Tunable A is in like-new condition (and only actually about six months old). I paid $225 for it, I am the first owner. They’re still around $230 brand new from Phil.
The Burke was made in late 2005 and is also in like-new condition with the exception of a heavy patina which can be polished off if you like. I paid $140 for it, I am the first owner. These are now $170 brand new from Michael.
Any takers?
[Edit] Since I did only recently drop the $230 for the Chieftain I don’t know if I’d be comfy with an even trade for the Sindt but a no-wait period to obtain a Sindt would definitely be a factor in the trade.
Are there any Sindt A owners that could comment on their whistle? I think my main reason for not being as happy with the Chieftain is that, when it comes to whistles below C, I’m not as big a fan of the sound produced from thick-walled bodies. I’m hoping that a Sindt would be similar to the sound I get from my Generation Bb (obviously a half-step lower). Am I correct in assumint this?
I can understand where you’re at on this. We have a Sindt on order. ETA is six months. If you haven’t seen it already, I thought you would be interested in this thread from the Lunasa discussion board:
I have two A whistles: Burke alum and Sindt. They occupy different places in my whistle world. I have never had the need to take/have an “A” at a session or other gig so I mainly play them for my own enjoyment. However, if i did have a burning need for a session “A” I’d take the Burke. If I was going to play solo or do recordings [ok, stop laughing all of you, right this minute ] I’d pick the Sindt. The burles seem to have more “punch” then the Sindts while the Sindts have a lovely mellow quality and just “feel” nice in my hands. The same applies to the other Sindt/Burke keys I have.
I do have a Sind D that is just lovely and that’s what made me think of trying another Sindt to fill my void with the key of A. I rarely use the A at sessions either but it’s a key that I enjoy.
While the D was well worth the wait, as you mentioned, half a year is… well, half a year. That’s why I figured I’d go fishing here first.
Thanks for the comments so far.
I had a Sindt A a few years ago and sold it,
not liking it very well. The features that make
the sindt D sing seemed absent–I thought
it was quiet and not very interesting sounding.
The same whistle design doesn’t necessarily
work as well in different keys.
Personally I think there are better A whistles
more readily available–however it’s obvious
others like them fine.
