I’ve just converted a bolt quiver for use as a case for long whistles that don’t fit in the knife case I usually use for my whistles. This turned into quite the crafty project but a little niche to share my excitement too much with friends. I thought I’d shared here, since the topic of cases comes up periodically.
Usually I’m hauling multiple instruments and maybe some AV gear, so it’s hard to be careful with any particular single piece or two of gear. These whistles are Carbony close spacing, so they don’t come apart in half like most of my whistles do. The little cloth sleeve they each came with was really not enough for me. The quiver is a nice solid case, so I can toss it around without too much worry about the whistles inside. Obviously not like a Pelican or something, but a big improvement and enough for my car.
I lined the inner tube with felt, and padded the bottom with some random foam. (From the shipping material from a pedal I got for Christmas.) The padding is a little taller on the shorter whistle side so it doesn’t down inside.
It should be plenty long enough. I just clicked through again (it goes to the Temu website, but it’ll be the UK version), and the tube is 24.61 inches closed and extends to 42.91 inches.
I’ll try posting the whole (comically long) link below in case it helps, but if you still come up against the warning, search Temu for something like “large telescopic poster tube”. They may also list on eBay or Amazon, I just find buying direct is often cheaper. I recently mislaid the bamboo paintbrush rest I use to stop high whistles rolling off pub tables, and they were about £5 each on eBay. Same price on Temu for a pack of six.
Thanks for the hint with the photos. I tried to use Dropbox first but it didn’t give me a real link. Went to Facebook next but would edit if there is an easier way.
The largest one in the knife case is an aluminum Burke low G, split apart. (It’s 16 inches put together.) The brass Burke low A fits in as one piece (it’s 14 inches.)
The two in the new case are Carbony close finger close spacing, a low D (24 inches, blue) and low F (19 inches, red).
The bolt quiver is from amazon https://a.co/d/cKli81P. It’s length could be approximately 18 to 30 inches. There is an arrow version that goes up to 39 inches; that could work for the 36 inch long low A. It came with a shoulder strap already attached which was convenient, and the separator foam bit which I cut up a bit and used. The bolt one is large enough in diameter for 3 whistles.
