Laburnam

Do any of you UK, Irish or European types have any laburnam (laburnum) wood for chanters available to you, either in your posession or a source for same? I have not been able to locate any commercial sources. I would like to get ahold of a small amount.

Cheers,
Ted :astonished:

Is laburnam safe to use?
I know the seeds are very toxic.
I just wonder if the wood is safe to handle?

Alban Faust, bagpipemaker Melerud/Sweden made a Cornemuse de Berry from Laburnam for a friend.
Maybe Alban have some pieces to sell or know where to buy.

(ask for “Goldregen”)

A friend told me that he have seen some Laburnam at Cropp/Hamburg/Germany.

The fruits of this tree are very poisonous, also every part of the tree, but it is said that dry laburnam-wood is not “so” poisonous for adult person.
It is not allowed in germany to plant this tree near schools or kindergarten, if you have little children please be carefully with the dust of laburnam.

I played the Cornemuse made of Laburnum, it is a wood with a nice yellow-braun coulor, but I think it is not the best wood for a chanter.
The wood is like a mixture of esch (ash?) and maple.

I have got some Laburnham, for further information E-mail me off list.

As far as the poisoness part goes, I’m still here after using it for many years, it makes very good pipes.

A forum for tree owners…with contact info. Some seem to want to cut their Laburnum trees down, growing to close to the house.

Good old Davy…always helpful. I notice Chris Bayley also makes pipes of this wood. chris.bayley@virgin.net He might know of sources.
