I am so excited to embark on the journey of learning the tin whistle, penny whistle, Irish whistle, by any other name I’ve lurked and perused and scouted for information on which whistle to buy as my first and was on the verge of purchasing a Freeman tweaked Sweetone from The Whistle Shop when I saw the post here on the Bluebird.
So I invoked the female privilege of changing my mind and ordered the Bluebird instead. Can Not Wait! (No, I’m not excited, not at all)
Anyway, thought I’d actually register on the forum and share my joy!
Maki, I have a wide range of likes in music. From ITM, to other Celtic styles, bagpipes, light rock, 50’s style music, ballads, etc etc
I want the whistle so that I can learn to play the music that stirs my soul. Celtic (forgive me if I’m not using the proper terminology, that’s what I hear it called mostly) that style of music really speaks to me. I have very little musical background when it comes to playing an instrument. I can read music with difficulty, although I’ll be trying to improve that skill. I’ve had a few piano lessons and have a keyboard here at home that I and my kids pick out tunes on. I, also, have a flute which I’d like to learn to play one day
My end goal with getting the whistle is to eventually be able to play for myself, for fun and then to learn Christian worship songs so that I can play with the band at my church. They have a guitarist, a drummer who uses a box drum and a harmonica player so I think they need a whistle!
Stormie Gail, you came to the right place!
Welcome again, and if you need direction, have any questions, or just want to chat feel free to post.
Also, any subject your interested musically has already been discussed if your inclined to do a subject search on the forum.
I don’t need to tell you that music is a great joy, one that is available to anyone willing to work for it.
A Bluebird is just a wonderful whistle, a Great way to start, IMHO.
I am quite inclined to use the search function. I am also quite inclined to spend hours on this forum just taking in all the info available!
Music, the soother of the soul! (unless it’s stirring you up and makin’ you want to dance! )
and
Yay! just got notice my Bluebird in D is winging it’s way to me!
Stormie Gail, the Bluebird is an excellent whistle, although you would have also enjoyed the tweaked Sweetone. Hard to go wrong with a Freeman tweaked whistle of any type. FWIW, I will admit the Bluebird is my favorite of all of Jerry’s offerings.
As a beginning whistler you might like a website called Whistle and Squeak. There is folk, hymns, classical and Christmas music in standard notation as well as whistle tab. This is a great site – not a huge amount of music, but more than enough to give a good start.
There is a website called Praise Whistlers Abroad, which is very small, not as active as C&F, but a group of Christian whistlers many of whom also post here. (I’m Judy K on PWA) There are music files (older hymns) to listen to, most with the written music available, in the Praise Exchange. Come over and visit.
I’ll second the advice for whistle and squeak. It was made specifically for people who are new to the whistle and either don’t know sheet music well or haven’t gotten used to matching the whistle fingerings to the dots.
And also, Welcome!
Thanks for the links Judy! Bookmarked them to check out tomorrow. (as it’s past my bedtime right now and I should be getting some sleep before the kiddies wake up bright and early ;p )
Welcome, Stormie Gail!
There just aren’t enough whistlers in the world, thanks for joining us!
You’ll find most people love the sounds you make. Don’t be afraid to take it outside to play!
Thanks for the welcome, Riverman. Although, I’m not to sure about people loving the sounds I make, at the moment, anyway.
Received my whistle not 15 minutes ago and my kids are already giggling at the squeaks and squawks I’m making. Hey, as long as they’re laughing and not crying, it’s all good!
Love my beautiful whistle already. Thanks, Jerry!!
Stormie
(P.S. went over and signed up at the PWA forum, today)
Just wanted to say that while I know I’m a newbie whistler and have no experience with any other whistle, I love my Freeman Bluebird! Yesterday was finally able to get just the right breath to produce nice clean sounds and what a beauty! Can’t wait until I have more skill and can really bring the best out in it.
well SG, you have influenced me, i was all set to buy a Jerry Freeman Blackbird in D then i read your thread and opted for the Bluebird, which is winging its way to Wales as i type, i have a Celtic soul and the whistle is to me a Celtic instrument with a haunting voice
