Interesting (?) - Killarney Whistles/Órlaith McAuliffe demo

Órlaith McAuliffe demonstrating a Killarney Whistle (Facebook video) - very impressive - both her playing (no surprise there!) and the whistle’s tone and obvious responsiveness. They look nice too - no nasty metal beak in your mouth!
The Killarney Whistle

The first impression is that of a faux Sindt head on a Feadóg tube but I don’t really mind that. It sounds lovely in the clips and is really the first new whistle in a decade that gives me a tickle of wanting it. Worth a try, I’ll get back when it arrives.

For the avoidance of misunderstanding, I have no connection with these and have not myself met/tried one yet - but if Órlaith says they’re good, I trust her assessment!

Likewise tempted to give it a go and, having just sold my three original Overtons, decided I could afford to order before the whole of C&F jumps in!

Have previously tried a Sindt and thought I’d be quite happy to have one alongside (not instead of!) my Bracker if I could get one for a similar price, so (noting the obvious Sindt/Thornton likenesses) could be an interesting experiment. Think it’s sounding at a better pitch in Órlaith’s clip than Padraig Buckley’s own (sharp), but not too concerned about that when the discrepancy could just as easily be video/tech-related as real life and it’s clearly working for all of them!

That whistle sounds very nice indeed, with a healthy amount of chirp and “pop” and a nice roundness to the tone.

And BTW, the tune is “Bonnie Kate”.

How long before the waiting list for one of these exceeds our remaining lifetime ?

Certainly looks like Órlaith’s plug is going to get them a flurry of orders!

I don’t know, it was the clips on their website that sold it for me. Quite refreshing to come across makers who play nice music to show off their instrument.

ARgh.. the forum is not functioning well tonight.

Anyway, I think that was the most impulsive buy I’ve ever made.

Thanks for sharing/causing me to relapse.

Well aren’t we a sorry bunch.. that’s €65 less to spend on the holidays. Ach well, you only live once

It’s an epidemic!

I forgot to mention, in my opinion that was some quite excellent playing!

… I can’t wait to get the whistle so I can start playing like that :tomato:

Indeed, then again, in Orlaiths case it was quite expected  I enjoyed the other clips at the makers website as well though.

I ordered mine on the 13th, i do hope i beat the queue that seems to be forming rather rapidly.

Indeed, and fair enough… But how/why did you end up there? ;-D :poke:

But how/why did you end up there? ;

You posted the link to the website didn’t you? I usually don’t follow facebook links as they, more often than not, require me to sign up before they show me anything. So I watched the clips on the website, which are usually more telling than anything posted elsewhere and Pat Buckley playing the Skylark and the youngfella playing Trim the Velvet did it for me.

Aye, understood re: FB and agreed re: the in-house demo clips. But I posted here at all because I’d seen Órlaith’s FB post & demo which led me to look at the website which she also linked, so… butterfly farts…

A great slip jig by the way…

Best wishes.

Steve

My Sindt (Sindtdóg?) Is just that. It really did benefit from the Feadóg tube IMO.. looking forward to trying out the Killarney!
Cheers!

I was wondering if they make the nickel plated tubes themselves or just buy them in bulk from Feadóg teo or some other manufacturer. I would have no problem with that and it would definitely be a clever move in keeping the price down and saving time. I prefer nickel tubes although I am not generally a fan of mixing yellow and white metal but at the end of the day the overall sound and playability are more important factors than the visual impact.
