Robert Bigio is adding some interesting articles to his website.
Two recent additions are on Windward Flutes: http://www.robertbigio.com/windward.htm and traverso maker Jean-Francois Beaudin: http://www.robertbigio.com/beaudin.htm
There’s also one on Chris Norman: http://www.robertbigio.com/norman.htm.
Ta, Tin!
So Chris is making flutes now as well. Wonderful.
I would love try that f flute hes holding!
Looks lovely!
I thought that was a rather interesting tidbit. Also the bit about Forbes Christie blowing up his teacher’s desk! And (in order to comment on all three articles), the Boudin flute makes me curious about other Boehm-bore simple system flutes, like Calum Stewart’s (a variant of which Terry McGee offers). Sometimes, the stories behind the flutes and the players are as good as the instruments or music themselves.
I thought Calum’s flute was more of a traditional simple conical bore Rudall Rose design with a modern headjoint?
Thanks for the links - the Beaudin flute hasn’t made it to this side of Europe much. I like the Windward lots! Has anyone a ballpark figure for one of their 6 key flutes with the saltspoon keys I wonder.
Close–but Calum’s flute has a cylindrical (Boehm) bore, but it’s simple system (and has a new head, as you mention). There’s a price list for Windward flutes at their website. If I did the math right, a six-key would be $3720 (Candadian dollars?).
I like his flute - it never seems to crack with all his playing. What is it?
The Mancke head is okay (the price is not - same price as a new traverso).
With any luck, me ol’ pal Jemtheflute will be along in a minute. He restored Calum’s flute for him, so he’ll have all the gen.
Dunno about “in a minute”, but better late than …
Right. Calum’s Rudall Carte & Co. flute which he has been playing as his main one for a couple of years now is a cylinder bore with Bohm head ( so “Bohm tube”) 8-key simple system. He early on ditched its original head and had (fitted) for it first a head by Robert Bigio, then (after much experimentation) the Manke head, and I believe most recently a head (or more than one) by Pete Worrell. I think he may now primarily be playing a flute fully made by PW which is based on (derived from/“after” rather than “copied”) the RC&Co. cf http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3163678339596&set=a.2818700275360.2114653.1494497348&type=1&ref=nf.
If his flute cracked and needed repair, then it’s just like the rest
The link doesn’t work for me.
Love his playing. Anyone got his CD for sale? It’s out of print
