Hello From A New Member

Just a quick hello from a new member of this forum. I stumbled on it whilst searching for other material on Uilleann Pipes. very happy to find you!
A brief history of myself .In the beginning I was very impatient to start the pipes so I went for the first maker that had a very short waiting list ,and didn’t do my homework by asking other Pipers of their opinion …be warned!! . Hindsight is a wonderful thing  I was unfortunate enough to buy a very badly made half set from a pipe maker . The drones were never completed and I never got my money back ( about $1000) on the practice set that was unplayable( by experienced players not me), If only I had the patience for an Ian McKenzie set :sniffle:

After this dubious start I met many wonderful pipers who helped me tremendously. Now I’m wanting to get back into playing , and I thought this would be a good start. thanks again for your forum and I’m sure you’ll be pestered by me soon  .

You’re very welcome!!!

Tommy.

Welcome to the forum - only joined a few days ago myself after watching it for a couple of years.

Ask questions there’s a wealth of expertise available not just from fellow pipers but also with a number of very experienced makers.

You would like an Ian MacKenzie set so I guess you are “Down Under” in the land of Oz. There are several members on the Forum from this part of the world who would be more than happy to suggest ‘local’ pipemakers who will make you a fine instrument.

Beware also the cheap sets often offered on e-bay - they are from Pakistan.

Thanks for the welcome and the good advice!

Welcome to our scary corner of the web.

I assume from your nick that you are also a gentleman rider of the two-wheeled steed.

Huzzah for piping bikers!

(…who recently switched to a big scooter after many years on a cruiser.)

Welcolme GSX1100s. As a motorcyclist and as a previous automotive engineer, it’s easy for me to see where the inspiration for your nickname came from.

This forum is a great place for advice and information on all aspects of piping.

Based on the information you provided, you must be the new Western Australian piper that was mentioned in the forum recently (another victim of the infamous J.P I imagine).

If you’re after a Mackenzie chanter, I own a Mackenzie practice set and the chanter might be on the second-hand market for a low price in about four or five months when my replacement chanter is completed (stay tuned!).

All the best.

Hi GSX1100s from GSXR 1100 WP.

I’ve always been a Yamaha rider myself.
SR500 (Don’t laugh too much  )
Until some car driver with his eyes shut turned into me and wrote it off.
Luckily not me as well.

Welcome

David

I too am new to the board,

I started playing uilleann pipes about 2-3 months ago. I think I’m really starting to get the feel for them now and its actually starting to sound like music!!! The first 3 weeks my roomate said that it sounding like I was choking a goose.

Dan is going to the basement again to choke the goose :frowning:

Oh, and tompipes. I just ordered your CD.
WOW

Welcome gsx1100s, I hope that you are able to use this forum to your advantage, and may it be of great help to you… having said that, don’t pay ANY attention to anything I write within these hallowed cyber-pages.

Yes it is a great CD. Mr. Tommy Martin is a great fellow, and a mighty tractor operator… hell, some folks just refer to him as Mr. Deere… not.

A sad start but delighted to hear that the forces of evil didn’t keep you at bay.

May we presume you hail from Gondwanaland? If so, what part? Like virtually everyone in Ireland, I’ve spend a year in Oz. Wonderful place. WA is a mad house, complete with giant chainlink fence to keep the inhabitants from getting out (rabbit-proof fence me arse)!!

Why do you want a rabbit-proof fence on your arse? Trying to keep the kudies in?

Hi all , yes I’m a rider as well ( well picked  ) I have a Katana and a Hornet 919. I’m from Victoria , where the pipes are cold and the reeds are damp
I have no chanter but I do have a bag and bellows . So at the moment I am trying to remember the stuff I learned a while back by using a piece of dowel with holes drilled to match the chanter .

I’m really suprised the infamous J.P. is still operating! I’ve seen first hand the sorts of horrors he’s created. We did advised him very early on to wait until he’s perfected his craft before taking orders from the world stage but he decided to ignore it and yet again too many people burnt…it’s a sad day that Western Australia has to put up with him making misery upon the rest of the world.

Well, good to see you’re now in contact with Ian Mackenzie. He’s a fine pipemaker.

Hope you didn’t lose too much dosh on the first set? There are actually a few good pipemakers with short waiting lists that you could of gone for at present. Having looked into it myself, I found a few (since I’ve just ordered a set the other day too).

Kind regards

Andy Parnell (West Australian living in Wales)

Glad you survived David, I will need lessons for quite some time.

Joke: - What do you get if you cross a joke with motorcycle???

Hi Andy I thought it best to edit my post so as to explain things better. My unfortunate dealings with the pipe maker occured a few years ago, so it follows that the afforementioned maker didn’t produce the pipes recently for me. They may or may not be still making I have no idea.I haven’t met or ordered pipes from Ian Mackenzie , although I have had the joy of seeing and hearing a full set of his , it was pure bliss to listen to  .
I thought it best to clear that up so that it doesn’t lead to further confusion. Sorry for not being clear enough in my introduction.
As for Westen Australia , my brother lived there for a time , in that time I visited him , and your state is beautiful. It reminded me of Melbourne when I was a kid , less stress and wonderful people.
