FS - Northumbrian Smallpipe $950

Traditional pitch seven keyed chanter. A very unique set of pipes. Made by Leistman

Tell me a little about your set that is for sale (as per your posting on the Chiff & fipple list) I am looking to buy a set of Northumbrian pipes, having been a piper (several genres) for many years. I’d be interested in knowing what’s the wood? How long have you had them? What Pitch is the chanter? Do you have a case for them? Extra reeds? Things like that.

BTW, are you anywhere near the Northampton/Montague area of Massachusetts? My son lives near there.

Yours,

Hi Craig
The pipes are made of Honduran Rosewood and buffalo horn. I believe they were made in the early 1990’s. They just came back from John Liestman, he made some reed adjustments and gave a thorough inspection. I am not the original owner, I bought them from a guy in Austin Tx. I am selling them because I recently got an antique NSP and I really don’t need two sets of NSP. They are in traditional pitch F# with seven keys. They have a very bright sound and they are featured in a photo in John Liestman’s tutor book. This would be a great set for someone looking to get started on NSP.
I don’t have a NSP case for them but I do have a small case that my antiques came in.
BTW here is my new set of NSP

Hope this helps.
Cheers
Tom

Many thanks for your reply. Could we continue this discussion off-list? My address is cpackard@cal.org
I can say that my main objective for the pipes is to be able to play with some other other instruments–fiddle and hammered dulcimer. The most instrument-friendly key for a set that I would use would be F (rather than F#), so I would need to be able to adjust the reed a little further out in the chanter to lower everything in pitch to approximately F. Have you ever tried that? The drones, I assume, can easily accommodate to a chanter in F.

Thanks,

Craig

Good morning, Tom.

I’ve written to John Liestman to ask about the tuning question --playing your set in F rather than F#. Assuming that this is doable, can we proceed with negotiations, preferably off-list or by phone? I like the look of the set and everything that you write about it Does the price include shipping? Could we talk by telephone some time today?

I’m happy to report that the pipes have found a new home. Thanks to all who showed an interest.
