Francis Mc Peake IV

Sorry but read this and had to laugh, it seems that Mr McPeakes ego knows no limits

“Francis McPeake IV, the fourth generation of this world-famous musical dynasty and one of the few authentic uilleann pipers in the world today”

What does an authentic uilleann piper do ?

Why does the word “authentic” remind me of commercials for restaurants located outside of their country of origin? :stuck_out_tongue:

Matt

perhaps in the country of origin people would not eat there.
Perhaps the same can be said for authentic pipers no one would listen

I find the quote to be offensive and full off self importance. i think a superiority complex may be involved here

Where did you read this? Just curious.

What does an authentic uilleann piper do ?

They spend their lives promoting uilleann pipes, just like the McPeake family have done for over 100 years.
That family’s influence on Irish piping has been greatly underestimated for far too long.

Tommy

Your are right Tommy the Mc Peake Family has done this and i among other will be forever grateful. I also agree that their contribution to piping and traditional music has always been underestimated. Francis IV has not however carried on this tradition.

Fair point.
And, for whats worth the quote is iffy enough.
It’s just that I’d hate for other readers of this forum to think that the McPeakes contribution to piping is/was less than good.

Oil the breast.

Tommy

Just parsing things a bit …

I wouldn’t necessarily blame a publicist’s advertising blurb on the hubris of the performer. Agencies can be both independent and loose with their language.

Authentic piper … Well, he’s not a Bulgarian gaida player moonlighting on “the uilleanns”. Authentic pipes … sure he’s not playing the MIDI pipe-o-tron.

OTOH, calling someone an authentic guitarist or an authentic pianist would seem pretty bizarre.

Few … In the context of the other musics and instruments represented by the agency - guitars, fiddles, keyboards, etc. - even several thousand uilleann pipers in the world is arguably “few”.

I wonder, has anyone ever attempted a guesstimate of the number of uilleann pipers?

The contributions of the older generations of Mc Peakes, (Francis I, II and III) should never be forgotten. It is a pity that this reputation is being ruined

Agreed and agreed again

However i find it difficult to believe that an agency with such a diverse range of clients spanning such diverse musical genres would make such a specific comment without some “help” from the client themselves.

Yeah well, you know how our egos work. Your agent says you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, and it’s hard to ring them up and say, “No, I’m not!”.

Plus, this is an American agency probably booking mostly the American market, which is saturated with pseudo-Celtoid bands. So “authentic” is sometimes just a code word for “from Ireland”. Beyond that, the finer distinctions between pure trad, pop trad, and pop are lost on the general American audience.

I think its horses for courses.

He along wi lots o young folk prefer a more upbeat tradition and frae where I am sitting it seems to be pretty widespread. There are those who tut tutted when Paddy Keenan came along .Tis just another branch of the same tree.
Oh, and never ever believe whit ye read in the press
Uilliam

I think there is a bit of a difference here

Fellow pipers,

Forget the McPeakes…here is my biography.

Patrick Sky is the best Uilleann piper in the world. He is also the best looking piper. Here is a list of his accomplishments.

1- Plays two sets of pipes simultaneously.
2- Can play the pipes while riding a bicycle.
3- Guinness book of world records for playing the fastest “Bucks of Oranmore”.
4- Can play the pipes over his shoulder mimicking the Great Highland pipes so accurately the sound is 5- indistinguishable from the real thing.
6- Played the pipes while running the Boston marathon; came in 3rd.
7- In 1964, with his pistol, shot another piper in the knees for claiming that he was the greatest piper.
No other piper has come forward since, disputing Patrick’s claim.
8- Has a repertory of 4000 tunes.

I hope this gives you an idea of just how great a piper is Patrick Sky.

I have wondered for ages who it was that did this.I suppose it twas inevitable we would find oot tho

When I mentioned PK in the earlier post I wasnae comparing like fer like but pointing to the fact that some folk do/did not like PK’s style ,tis allowed, and is not really that important
Uilliam

Patrick Sky is indeed the best, most good looking and the funniest. Here are some more Patrick Sky facts.

If you have five dollars and Patrick Sky has five dollars, Patrick Sky has more money than you.
There is no ‘ctrl’ button on Patrick Sky’s computer. Patrick Sky is always in control.
Apple pays Patrick Sky 99 cents every time he plays a tune.
Patrick Sky can sneeze with his eyes open.
Patrick Sky can eat just one Lay’s potato chip.
Patrick Sky destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.
Patrick Sky can kill two stones with one bird.

Hey Pat - I never knew you ran the Boston marathon ! :astonished:

Funniest? I don’t know about that. Seems every time I play the pipes people start to laugh…

Question: If this agency is so excited about the McPeake Band then why do they not have their tour schedule posted to their website? This band is supposedly going on tour organized by this agency. They are suppose to be touring the states for almost 1 month beginning in mid Sept. Their agency cannot be all that keen about them if they are not even bothering to post their tour schedule. Just some info that I thought was kindof interesting. Don’t you?

Hey Pat - I never knew you ran the Boston marathon !

Yes, and he’s so good, he didn’t even have to be in Boston to do it.

Why don’t you ask the agency, then let us all know.
