Flute comparison: Hamilton, M&E R&R, Seery

Here’s a new comparison recording of three flutes, playing the double jig “The Maid at the Well.”

The flutes in order are:

–Hamilton
–M&E Rudall & Rose
–Seery Pratten

I hope you enjoy this and find it helpful.

The Hamilton sounds wonderful, but I’m stunned at how close the M & E is.

How 'bout a comparison without telling us beforehand which flute is which? Let us guess which flute is which. Maybe do a little poll or something afterwards - be interesting what the results would be…

BTW, good playing, keep up the good work.

Thank you for the kind comments!

I know you probably don’t know the history, but I shy away from playing such a game here for many reasons. I may have something like that posted on my website at some point, though, in which case I would announce it here.

I do think it would be fun, but am concerned that if someone who considers themselves an expert were to not guess correctly, it could lead to bitter comments and bad feelings.

I agree. James, do you think this is because the M&E was your most regular player prior to the Hammy’s arrival? I’ll be interested in hearing another Hammy clip once you’ve had it for a year or so.

Before the Hammy got here I played the Seery pretty exclusively, trying to “build up my chops” for a Pratten embouchure.

I think it worked–I credit having the Seery to work with for the speed with which I’ve become comfortable with the Hammy.

I think the M&E R&R is just really that good of a flute–Michael Cronnolly got everything right with this one.

Not that his old style M&E is a bad flute, but the R&R is really something special.

I would have to agree. I love the sound (Even as untrained as I am) of my new M&E/R&R, and both of the trained flute players I’ve shown it to so far really love it as well.
