Dixon Whistles

After 3 days of playing my new Dixon’s I can forget about all those other whistles I thought I would surely have to have. They are everything a whistle needs to be (in my humble opinion of course). I have the D,low D and low G..and it is hard to pick a favorite. It seemed as though you had to have a (fill in the name of you favorite expensive whistle) to be a true whistle player, but these instruments are I need.
And just as a side note,I was concerned about the tuning of one of them so I emailed Tony who go back to me right away and solved my problem, and it was my problem, not the whistle’s.
So you have great whistles, great prices(don’t tell Tony, but he could sell these for a lot more than he does),and great customer service…What more to you need?
All the praise of Dison’s on this board are well deserved..just add me to the list.

Hearty agreement here! I just received my Dixon D and Bb yesterday, and I can’t bring myself to put them down (much to my wife’s dismay).

Even my eight-year-old like them - he managed the bottom-D note on the first try, something he has problems with on just about every other whistle I own, including the small Generation F and G whistles.

I’m planning to order a Low-D next, and possible a Low-A or G.

Hi Dave,

You must have missed the thread about expensive vs cheap whistles, started by Peter Laban, and prompted by a silver whistle with vinery engraving!

My final impression of that discussion was that if you want to play an expensive whistle, feel free, but if you do so in Ireland expect them to raise eyebrows and possibly point and laugh, because they’ll probably never have seen one before.

I wholeheartedly agree with your Dixon praise, low & high, and for the man Tony. I consider these to be my expensive whistles, my high D was £16.00, for which I could buy 4 Nickel Generation Ds and still have change for a cup of tea!

count me in, I’ve got a D, C, Bb, F, and lowD, nearly a week now, they are fabulous!
It’s the lowD I’m in love with, I must force myself to put it aside…

Never even handled a Dixon. Mmmmm…I feel WhOA coming on…

I, too, have a Dixon. It’s a non-tunable, soprano D, and it’s my favorite whistle. I’m thinking about buying a low D and his new design tunable D and C.

Do the people who have posted to this thread have tunables or non-tunables, and if you have tried both, which do you think are better?

I have a tuneable High D and just love it. I recently acquired two more expensive whistles but they don’t come near the Dixon. I am considering a Low G - actually I have filled out the order on the Whistle Shop but have not hit the submit button. Last time I ordered a whistle from the US it cost me more for the Customs and Brokerage fees than the whistle - actually than the 3 whistles that I bought.

Great whistles Tony.

All of mine are tunable, and unlike some other “tunables” his cover a wide range,in other words a practical tunability. Well worth the extra cost I think

I have both the High D and The Old Style Low G, The D is Non Tunable and the Low G is.
One or both is in reach at all times.

I have tunable D and Bb, and the tuning slide is beefy, allowing for a very broad range of tuning. It is a much more significant slide than the one on my Susato Kildare Low-A, which is little more than a small connector joint.

Another comment to make - this is one of the more forgiving and easy-to-play whistles I’ve ever played, although up until now my experience has been limited to the budget whistle range (Walton, Clarke, Feadog, Generation, etc). If I had to rank my cheap whistles in terms of playability, the Clark Sweetone would be at the top, the Dixons would be a close second, followed by my Waltons Mello D.

The sound of the Dixon beats them all!
