Classical and similar music for the Whistle

Hi

I’m looking for additional music to play on my Whistle.
I’m still just starting out, and haven’t been able to find a song by Ear yet.
I will, even if it involves lots of practice to do so. But I’m currently concentrating on expanding my list of tunes memorized, and getting better at the whistles notes etc..

I’ve got links, and even a couple books that contain some irish, and scottish music for the Whistle. But most of them are quite fast, and contain plenty of grace notes (yea, I know you could ignore them, but still..)
I’m not ready play those quite yet, I won’t neglect them forever, I really like the tunes, I’ll just get to it a bit later.

So far I’ve been practicing and learning, slower, less complicated tunes, like folk music, and what classical music I can find.

So far I’ve learned to play:
Assembly (memorized, and can play it fast)
Taps (memorized)
When Johnny Comes Marching Home (Memorized, can play fairly fast)
March (Memorized, also Fast)
Minuet by Bach (Memorized, fast)
Amazing Grace (Memorized, fast when need be)
LOTRs Hobbit song (memorized)
Scarborough fair (Memorized)
Whiskey in a Jar(Not Memorized, yet)
Brown Eyes (Not quite memorized)
Battle Hymn of the Republic (Memorized)
Yankee Doodle (Memorized, can play Fast)
Ba Ba Black sheep and Twinkle little star (Memorized, both essentially same tune)
I Found for myself London bridges and Mary had a little lamb by accident while just playing whatever notes came to mind

The more songs of this kind I learn, the better my whistling gets, and the fast I become, especially when going between the first and second octaves.
So I’m looking for music likes this, particularly classical music. I like the Folk and Irish music, but I really enjoy classical music too. I was really happy to find Bachs Minuet for the whistle.

I’m still learning from sheet music, in a way.
Since I can’t play by Ear (yet) I learn what notes I need to play from the sheet music, and I get the rhythm and timing from listening to a recording, or Midi file online. although don’t have to listen to a recording if the tune is really familiar. Like “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” I knew that tune for years, but as its alternate lyric set “When the ants go marching down” But despite knowing the tune by heart, I couldn’t find the required notes without sheet music (which I stumbled on by accident, due to its alternate name)

I’ve collected links to several whistle music sites, but very few have anything non fast, complicated and Irish
To give you an example of what I’m looking for I plan on learning most of the songs on these web pages:
http://www.tinwhistler.com/songtype.asp?songtype=2
http://www.tinwhistler.com/songtype.asp?songtype=4

I found this website too:
http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/findtune.html

Which is really useful, but it doesn’t allow you to search by category, just by name. So you have to know exactly what your looking for, to find it.
Which is problematic, because Other then the few pieces listed on tinwhistler.com I don’t know what other classical music can work on the whistle.

So even names of tunes would be a big help.

Thanks for your time.

-Lem

P.S. Just so you know what keys I can play in, like my signature says. I have 2 Ds 1 C and 1 B-flat.
ALthough my signature doesn’t list that I’m receiving for my birthday in early april, a O’Brien whistle set (1 head 5 bodies) in the Keys E, E-flat, D, C, and B-flat

Here are a couple of classical tunes that works great on the whistle.

Sorry about the smiley. It should be: K:D

Thanks falkbeer

Never heard of Bourrée before, but I like the way it sounds.
I’ve listened to Rondeau before, Really like dthe tune, never thought it would fit on the whistle that well.

Thanks!

You asked for classical or similar… well here is the similar part. I don’t know how easy this will be to find but a friend of mine in Montreal, Canada gave me a CD by an inspired whistler named: Jean Duval. He has written 12 sets of tunes for the whistle in many non-standard-Celtic styles – all played with one hand.

I will try to remember to get more info off the CD info tonight if you are interested.

cheers,

Hi Lem,

I don’t know if these will help (not whistle specific) or not …

BTW - I did a search for public domain classical music. The important part being public domain.

Yes, it interests me. Might be fun to hear and try to reproduce.
Thanks for your help.

airbender:
THanks for the links, I haven’t been able to go through them fully yet. But it looks like I can start finding what I’m looking for in there.
If I can’t find something totally within the whistles range, maybe I’ll be able to play the middle of a piece.

Thanks again for your help/

Here are some other nice pieces that work excellently on the tin whistle.
