Just tinkering. It’s not for sale.
So, you’ve taken the plunge(r) and are now right up the Swannee; all pumped up? Ooops, dropped a Clanger there!
wwwwwWWWWEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeoooooooooooeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEE
I can’t speak to the chromatic thing, but here’s my Mack Hoover thought for the day:
Please bear in mind that I’m fifty-seven years old – no Spring chicken.
Today I somehow reached my lunch hour and drove from work to a vacant parking lot to collect myself. The instrument I carried with me was a Mack Hoover PVC, non-tunable, high D, #444, made for Brian L. (Lee?), in commemoration of his 27th birthday. It was one I got in trade somewhere along the line, and it’s a very sweet little tooter. Ok, so I’m more than twice the age Brian was when he got this thing!
We played a bunch of tunes together. After ‘Last Night’s Fun’, I felt sufficiently recharged. I drove back to the office, and I’m happy to say I made it through the rest of the day.
Small victories count.
Thanks, Mack.
That looks like a handy whistle, Mack.
How about a sound clip of you playing it?
I downloaded a fresh version of Audacity. Suffer the wait now or suffer the result later. Or better still Beth and Martin will be visiting in a couple of weeks and I’ll coerce them to make some sounds. Yes, that’s what I’ll do! Beth once took the side of whistlemakers that makes fair whistles but may not play all that well. She may not have been speaking my direction, but I hope she will cover for me again!
If she doesn’t then I will really take the plunge with my Flit can screamer. weeooobbbaaadddgggaaaggg! bad gag
C.T., that is such a touching and encouraging narrative! Thank you! If Brian is watching, he’ll be pleased, too!
I remember RMP. Them was some fun times!

Mack,
Beth and Martin? Sounds like a reunion from the old days when you had those whistle get togethers from 3 or 4 states. Sorry I never got to one but I have always wanted to make a visit from the “front range” of the Rocky Mt.s over to your neighborhood on the West side. I might still make a visit!
Back in the old days you could get a white head for 20 bucks and have it delivered in your mailbox in a tiny box with 2 stamps on it! Boy were those the days!
Man I just looked and the price has gone up to 30$ for a white cap plus you probably have to put 3 stamps on it now. I think you can tell that I am just kidding about the price increase on the whitecap. I have mine sitting by the computer and it is still one of my favorites! The sweetest tone and the best player for a trad whistle. Especially when you consider that a Burke NB sells for 200 bucks!
BTW I like the new pictures to accompany the price list!
Please give us a full report of your visit with Beth and Martin (pictures and sound clips included) It will make a great thread!!
Respectfully,
Nate
They came and went and had more stuff on leaving.
I did, too. What I gained was of the heart. I also have more space!
They both got Hoover instruments and are expected to share some sounds!
Mack
What a wonderful couple!
Bri’s been a busy boy the past couple of years…with the following result:
CLICKY!
(enter your email to view pictures - it’s safe and oh so worth it!)
To say nothing of expanding the family as well:
Any Mack, you’re 100% correct - I’m THRILLED to hear that the little PVC beauty we created what feels like so many years ago now, is still playing beautifully - and more, bringing happiness as it does so!
Hope to make it out to see you and Joan someday again in the not TOO distant future. And Beth, I’ll be seeing you in SLC before you leave!
Thank you again Mack! I have already been playing my lovely new car whistle. Sound clips of it and the slider, and photos of the lathe’s new home, will follow soon.
Bri - give me a call if you can. We are here all of tomorrow but I don’t know what our plans are yet.
