I am going to dazzle you all with my nomenclature.
I was wondering .. the fitting in the bag that connects to the chanter cap (whatever ye calls it)… is the hole simply drilled all the way through at the same diameter, or is there any flare to the bore? I am thinking of a way to connect a D chanter to my pastorals and would be looking to make a fitting that could connect.
Yes.. I have come to the dark side. I have been working with a Ginsberg C#
practice set that is sweet as honey , but I am looking to ‘convert’ into what would become a Union set.
If you wanted to play a UP chanter with your pastoral set, it seems to me that the simplest way to do it would be to get the pipemaker of your choice to make a chanter that would fit in the pastoral chanter stock.
Actually I was more curious if there was a ‘reverse’ conical bore.. wider inside than out: reduction fitting that “makes airflow speedier/more efficient”
or some such thing. I had seen a chanter stock in the old Sean Reid journal that looked it was made of horn, and resembled a goblet with a hole. But it seems that most say a straight cylindrical hole will do the job.
As for the suggestion of having a chanter made to fit, my pastoral chanter goes directly to the bag so I think I would rather have a fitting for a ‘normal’ cap…not connecting directly to the bag.
Now all I have to do is wait for the right concert chanter to come along…
oh yeah .. and win the lottery.
Would it not be more historically accurate Wireharp for you to just lop off the foot joint, thereby creating your own union pipe chanter? Isn’t that how this whole instrument started? - a modification to the pastoral pipes?
Yes it would Greg, and I do that as part of my ‘demo’ to show folks the evolution. Problem is it sounds like garbage. I don’t know if it is the bore or my reed.. ok.. it’s probably my reed, but it just doesn’t work beyond a few notes without falling apart.
Actually I plan to make my connector thingy and then try to attach the Ginsy
chanter the set. I might be able to ‘tune’ the drone reeds down to C#ish since the chanter is a shade sharp anyhoo.
I suppose the answer to everything is the ability to make your own reeds. If you made enough reeds you might eventually get one that would play as a pastoral reed and as a union reed with the foot joint removed. Or maybe not. I’m seriously considering jumping into the great challenge of reed making myself. My wife will be in Dublin later this month and I’m considering having her buy me one of the reed making kits from NPU. Anyone have any feedback on them? I suppose it is cheaper to assemble the bits yourself, but obviously a lot more convenient to just buy it holus bolus from Henrietta St.
